So this one is hard for me to evaluate. I LOVED Hereditary and I enjoyed Midsommar a lot, but Beau is Afraid was a total miss for me. I was bored. How can I be bored when Joaquim Phonex is on screen and Ari Aster directed you ask?
Well it was too long, too all over the place, too nonlinear, too unrealiable narration, and last but not least, too disgusting without a proper reward- ballance.
And how on earth was this supppsed to be a comedy?
The odd thing is, I still love the trailer. Based on the trailer I should have loved the movie.
But I didnt. I hope the next Ari Aster will go back to more actual storytelling, he is so strong there.
5/10 from me. The visuals were beautiful as was the music

I have mixed feelings about it. I think that if it had been one hour shorter, I could have rated it as high as 8. At three hours, it was just too long. The second and third chapters could have been shortened, or maybe the third chapter could have been excised altogether. As it was, it gets maybe a 6.5 from me.

I completelly agree with you except my rating is lower. .. but it may be expectations of greatness that I had coming in. The craft was amazing of course.

Haven't seen it, but have heard reviews and have also read the plot summary on Wikipedia. What I'm getting is that people let Aster get away with "weird for the sake of weird" when it came to Hereditary and Midsommar, it went to his head, and he leaned fully into self-indulgent "it's weird, therefore it's good" territory. I swear that every "good" review I read reeks of someone trying to convince themselves that they liked the movie.
I don't plan on ever watching it, myself.

It was way too long. My kid is a big Aster fan but also felt it was off.
It seems like there are fans our there that feel more is better but no.
This was in the realm of Honk For Jesus where some felt the preacher was dead at the end.
My kid said Beau is an unreliable narrator. It is hard to say he much actually happened.
I found it strange Elaine showed up (nice to see Parker Posey). I don't think mom was alive.
Maybe from when he got hit.

I liked (didn't love) "Midsommar". I felt it was too long and self indulgent. By the third Dinner etiquette scene I was waiting for the characters to die. And kept asking myself why these idiots would stick around for all of this BS.(haven't watched the uncut version that "explains" why.)
Don't imagine I'd like this either based on some posts here.

Did you want to watch BEAU IS AFRAID because you liked writer/director Ari Aster's previous movies? Well, I warn you that this is different from HEREDITARY and MIDSOMMAR. It actually has more in common with MOTHER! in terms of tone and scope. Some of the ideas it presents are deep, others are unsubtle yet imaginative, others are obvious and uninteresting, and others are so childish that they made my eyes roll. Without getting into spoilers, Ari's idea was to have a climax that tricks the audience into thinking everything is over and then pulls the rug from under us with the shocking epilogue, but the narrative structure wasn't properly constructed. It feels like two climaxes in a row. The story is mainly about the dynamic between a man (the title character) and his over-protective and guilt-tripping mother. It's very clichéd. Besides, the movie works better when it gets away from that and focuses on who Beau has become as a result of his upbringing. You see, the combination of all the fears he has isn't healthy, but individually, they're relatable. The scenes where Beau displays this kind of paranoia and bad things keep accumulating (from not being able to find his keys to walking on a street full of criminals) generate anxiety, especially because the viewer knows that he's in a hurry (first, because he has a flight to catch, and later, because he has to go to a certain event that can't start without him). I praise the events rather than the characterization, because Beau was mainly written as an observant of the weird stuff. I'm pretty sure most of his lines are "What?!" The flashbacks provide context, but even then, it's mostly him reacting. He doesn't have that much a personality when you think about it. It would've been easy for any actor to give a bad performance for not having that much to work with, which is why I was impressed with how Joaquin Phoenix carries the movie.
7/10

In a very strange family sucks way. I did appreciate they brought in Death from Supernatural as the friend of his father's.
