I live next to people who own a dog. Small one I am guessing based in the type of its bark. Yorkie or chiuava or wiener type of small.
BUT THEIR BARK IS SO EFFING LOUD! I cant take it.
the dog barks every night between 8-10 pm a lot. Like 30 or more minutes nonstop, then pause, then again.
(and often also during the day).
but the odd thing about the evening time barking is: I CAN HEAR PEOPLE there with the dog.
so I am asking you dog owners: what is going on?? Why would a dog bark nonstop for over 30 minutes almost each night when his people are there?
question two: at which point am I morally entitled to go there and ask them to somehow regulate it?
It sounds like a non issue but I share a bedroom door with these people and the barking is high pitch noise that is piercing in nature and the repetitivness of it is starting to drive me crazy.
Ps: I do Not support clipping dogs vocal chords. I love dogs. I am just wondering whats going on there that this even happens so often and lasts so long. Are they playing with him or ignoring him locked in a cage or what is it? Who lets their dog bark like this while they are home??
PS2: today it has been barking for 65 minutes so far, pretty much nonstop.

The book "The Intelligence of Dogs" by Stanley Coren includes a chapter on "Linguistic Intelligence in Dogs". It's kind of like Google Translate for barks and growls. In your case, it appears this is happening. Since you can hear that his people are there, most likely your neighbors are confining/ignoring their dog and he is loudly registering his disapproval.

The book "The Intelligence of Dogs" by Stanley Coren includes a chapter on "Linguistic Intelligence in Dogs". It's kind of like Google Translate for barks and growls. In your case, it appears this is happening. Prolonged or incessant barking, with moderate to long intervals between each utterance"Is anybody there? I'm lonely and need companionship." This is most often the response to confinement or being left alone for long periods of time.
Since you can hear that his people are there, most likely your neighbors are confining/ignoring their dog and he is loudly registering his disapproval. yeah and that makes me sad… what now. not sure i can ignore it forever. how would you approach it? I don't know how well you know your neighbors. If you feel comfortable approaching them, I'd start by expressing concern about the dog. You could quote the book and tell them what that bark means. Maybe they don't know, and this knowledge will help them become better pet owners. Since you "share a bedroom door with these people", it reads like you are in some kind of multi-family property. So, if you don't feel comfortable approaching them, or if your attempt fails, I would ask the landlord to intervene. Bear in mind some level of confinement/barking is inevitable. When I had a dog living here, I would crate him while I ate, and he told me, loudly, that he wanted out of his crate, even though I had already fed him! But 8-10 PM does not appear to be dinner time, so I believe that they are locking him in a cage and ignoring him. Good luck!

Good luck! i totally get that some barking happens. like my other neighbors also have a dog and je also barks but its those occasional 30-60 second burts of barking. MAAAAYBE 2-5 minutes max, a few times of day. no issue at all. but this MF barks half hour or more several times a day. its a yorkie i discovered today - saw it on a balcony. i never met the people i just moved in recently, its a townhouse, so we share a few walls, yeah. its such a delicate subject though. aargh. ill see if I meet them outside sometime and try and start talking to them and maybe I can understand more. like i dont get how THEY can stand it themselves, if its driving Me crazy through the wall and they are right there. (they also slam doors really hard often between 11pm-2am, not like once, but like 10 times in a row, like as if they had a LINE of people waiting for the bathroom or something - so there is more issues. this is the first time in my life i experience any annoying noise from neughbors, so unsure how to proceed).

I see only one option here. But seriously, I would tell them you hear the dog and it's bothering you. They'll either be compassionate or a-holes about it, but you wont know until you know.

Sorry, that's very inconsiderate of the owners.
I know my dog gets excited around that time because racoons are out, for that reason I either walk her, or if I let her go in the backyard (winter) I keep her on a long leash to bring her back quickly
The owners may be immune to it's barking (still inconsiderate!) that's why you have to let them know it's disturbing.

It sounds like they are shutting the dog out of something (a room).
Could the dog be on a balcony or patio while barking?

It sounds like they are shutting the dog out of something (a room). Could the dog be on a balcony or patio while barking? nope its inside. I can see their balcony and its not on it. Right now its 10:30 pm and its been barking like crazy again. I will need to talk to them. I never met them. What should my opener be? I want to make it clear I dont hate dogs, but at the same time this is getting really disruptive… How do I resolve this without alienating them, if possible? I literally never had “bad neighbors” of any kind so I have ZERO expericen in trying to approach uncomfortable topics with neighbors. Help

What would be the best way to talk to you about it?

Ask them if there is some reason why the dog barks all the time because it is disturbing to you. Ask them what can be done. Something not angry but requires a resolution.

Tell them you go to bed early and you can't unwind because of the barking. I get worried if my dog barks even a couple times at night. Where I live an owner can be fined up to 5000. Look for the bylaws in your area, but hopefully it's a last resort.
