I never liked the original and haven't seen other Evil Dead films until this one.
8/10 for some of the individual gore scenes - makes your skin crawl. Top-notch effects. But the sheer amount of blood and vomiting get to be a bit too much.
And it's hard to maintain the momentum with nonstop stabbing, strangling, shooting, burning, etc for an hour and a half. After a while I was ready for a dramatic change in the storyline, or the conclusion.
6.5/10
One other thing: There are some continuity issues with the appearance of several of the main actors, who were kids, (no doubt due to the production delays from COVID). You see them age more than a year over the course of the film, except that the amount of aging isn't what would occur over the course of just 24 hours in real life, and the age shifts weren't chronological (the kids start out young, get a little older, then shift back to young at a few points).

EVIL DEAD RISE takes place inside a building instead of a cabin in the woods. It’s not the first installment of the franchise to change that setting, but it’s the first one to do so with entirely new characters. Therefore, it doesn’t rehash its predecessors (which is much appreciated, especially in this day and age). Unfortunately, it rehashes itself. It’s so repetitive that I felt like I was watching the same scene over and over. Another noticeable addition to the formula is that it’s centered around a family, but the concept is wasted. Based on the fates of the characters and the way they react to tragic events, I’m pretty sure the plot wouldn’t have been that much different if it had been a group of friends (or a group of friends where some of them are relatives) as usual. Alyssa Sutherland’s performance is good, but the other cast members are passable at best, and a lot of the horror and/or comedy sequences aren’t effective.
4/10

EVIL DEAD RISE takes place inside a building instead of a cabin in the woods. Although, part of the story does take place in a lakeside cabin in the woods. Easy to forget those scenes given that 98% of the film is in an LA apartment building.
