More power to it, yet I've never been sure who beyond its target demographic will want in, & if that will curb their box office expectations.

I think it might be a little too weird for some people, but it was mostly a blast.
As a ZSJL fan, the supposed โinsultโ is greatly exaggerated.

I saw this yesterday. My review: The film looks great. I enjoyed the colours and sets and costumes in Barbieland. The performances are mostly good. Margot Robbie does a great job. Ryan Gosling does the best he can with Ken, although I really didn't like the way the character was written. Helen Mirren is good as the narrator. For the most part, I liked America Ferrera and Ariana Greenblatt as a mother and daughter that Barbie meets in the real world. There are some fun moments early on and a few laughs. The problem is that the film is very heavy handed at key moments and becomes entirely too preachy in the second half. The lecturing takes away from the enjoyment of the film. I didn't like parts of the story that focused and talked repeatedly about the patriarchy. The movie pits Ken against Barbie in a way that doesn't feel genuine and is not convincing and Ken comes across as an ass. There are moments where this film feels incredibly dishonest, which is a shame because this could have been a really fun and entertaining adventure. In spite of the winning performance of Margot Robbie and some amusing early scenes, Barbie is a preachy, heavy handed disappointment. 6/10.

The audience was mostly female at my screening. Early joke about equality got a laugh. Several bits like that got a laugh & there was applause at the end.
It makes sense.
It's Barbie. They are toys for girls to play with. All the other dolls like Ken are accessories (my sister commented there is a Toy Story where Woody says Ken is an accessory)
It is Barbie & Barbie's friends/boyfriend, etc.
So, yeah, Ken exists for Barbie to notice him. There is 1 Allan(discontinued doll) 1 Midge (discontinued as well). Skipper.
I enjoyed it. Right now I have it as 8/B. I was going to see it with my kid Sunday but the kid scored a Comic-con pass so...another time for the second viewing.

It's Barbie. They are toys for girls to play with. All the other dolls like Ken are accessories (my sister commented there is a Toy Story where Woody says Ken is an accessory) I actually played with Ken dolls as a kid. Not something I've ever admitted because of that connotation. In any case, wasn't huge on this movie. Wanted to like it because fear mongering culture warriors like Ben Shapiro hate it, but where it loses me is America Ferrera's big speech, which was preachy even for me (and also like a diet, lame version of the Cool Girl speech frim Gone Girl). Of course, I'm not a woman so on some level I can never relate to that speech. But then, neither should the Barbies, who live in an absolute matriarchy and don't have to face those issues and thus that speech's yasqueen truthtea should have no effect on snapping them back to reality. Hell, one of the main Barbies is Class III obese and nothing is made of it and the Kens are all over her. Which is fine, but where's this "it's impossible to be a woman because you have to want to be thin but not say you want to be thin but also be thin but not really thin but actually be thin et al" stuff fit into HER daily struggle? ... Or maybe I'm just bitter it made fun of guys who like The Godfather.
