On this July 5 international ' Bikini Day' a look at Classic Film swimsuit styles across the decades... Australian pioneer Annette Kellerman was a professional swimmer, vaudeville star, film actress, and writer. She was the first woman to wear a form-fitting swimsuit (pic). Causing much controversy and regarded as 'indecent exposure', previously, women had worn loose outfits made of linen and cotton that hid their bodies and figures almost completely. The popularity of her one-piece suit design resulted in her own line of women's swimwear. The "Annette Kellermans", the first step towards modern women's swimsuits... Annette Kellerman appeared in several movies, typically with aquatic themes, and was the star of the now lost 1916 film A Daughter of the Gods, (pictured below) and is credited as being the first major actress to appear nude in a Hollywood production. She was portrayed by Esther Williams, in the film Million Dollar Mermaid (1952) and is honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Do you have a memorable Classic Film swimsuit pic/moment to share?... Barbara Eden as Augie Poole in Ride the Wild Surf (1964) Not only memorable bikinis... the hilarious pool scene from My Favourite Wife (1940)

Esther Williams was perfection in the water, a teenage champion swimmer, however Esther could do it all, act, sing and dance. Williams made a series of films in the 1940s and early 1950s, 16 water ballet extravaganzas known as "aquamusicals", which featured elaborate performances with synchronised swimming and diving. Williams has said of her life that she could not remember a time when she wasn't in a swimsuit. There were hours, weeks and years spent in the pool, competitive swimming and movie making aqua musicals. Throughout her career, she was the picture of aquatic elegance in classic bikinis and fashionable one-piece swimsuits. Esther Williams' elaborate swim fantasies on screen set a new standard for pin-up style and made swimwear looks a new genre of must-have fashion for decades to come. Million Dollar Mermaid (US) aka The One-Piece Bathing Suit (UK) (1952), Williams stars in a biographical role as Australian swimming star Annette Kellerman. Million Dollar Mermaid became her nickname while she was at MGM. circa 1907, Kellerman (Williams) gets in hot water for wearing a one-piece suit too revealing for its time... Promotional still for Million Dollar Mermaid Esther Williams favorite swimsuit, a pink maillot from Bathing Beauty (1944). She later went on to release her own line of swimwear, which centered around subtly sexy one-pieces and retro bikinis.

M anina, la fille sans voiles , Manina, the Girl in the Bikini aka Manina, the Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter (UK) (1952) France Dir. Willy Rozier Bridget Bardot's second film role at the age of 17 drew much attention and was controversial for her low-cut scanty bikini. The classic film was one of the first occasions when a brief bikini had appeared in film and appeared at a time when this style of swimsuit was still widely considered immodest. Bardot popularized the fashionable bikini, following her role as Manina she was also photographed for publicity in a bikini on every beach in the south of France during the 1953 Cannes Film Festival.
