Vidal did so much acting he almost doesn't qualify for this thread. His entire life was a performance, in the Oscar (Wilde/Levant) sense. Vidal should have done Murder By Death, not the inept Capote. And I thought GV could have been cast as Nero Wolfe, instead of the Godawful Maury Chaykin. Vidal's public persona had the perfect blend of scholarly sophistication & child-like immaturity for the great detective (& in his later years, the corpulence).
