I like both, and see them in two different categories.
For savory dishes, the Russet is my favorite. That would include; mashed, scalloped/au gratin, baked/jacket, fried/smothered, "star" of the potato salad. I've never done much with Yukon Gold ... I'll have to try more.
The subtle sweetness of is perfect. A subtle addition of herbs, and/or butter, is lovely.

I love sweet potatoes, but I only have them roasted.
So I'll say Idahos. I can fry and garlic and pepper them up.

When I could have potatoes, Yukon Gold were my favorites, like nutsberry.

Third-yukon gold! Just made my mum's potato salad that I was craving. But only wanted to make enough for hub's & me for two meals. I bought a bag on sale only needed a third. So I blanched all of them, took out a third, froze the rest. But our power went out last Saturday for 10 hours-so not sure how the frozen potatoes took the slight warmup. Probably won't use them until Fall.

Fingerlings are good if you want stew without cutting potatoes, or just halve them.
A bit pricier and don't last as long, I don't think.

A big fat russet oven baked, salted and buttered, and adorned with steaming chili, thinly knifed mature cheddar and proper black pepper. A veritable tug-boat of a baked potato meal.

Mr sunshine and I don't eat many potatoes anymore, but if I want to make stew or potato salad I need potatoes. Instead of buying a small bag of potatoes that will go bad before we eat them all, I buy 'new' potatoes, red or white by the pound. Only takes a few when I want to make stew.
