Sometimes the pilot episode is actually NOT the best episode to start a series on.
If you were going to recommend a TV show to someone who had never seen it, which episode would you introduce them to the series with?
The A-Team: The Beast from the Belly of a Boeing
When I got the first season, it was used, and the discs had been switched, so instead of the 2 hour Mexican Slayride pilot, that was my first introduction to the show, and I was hooked.
Law & Order: SVU
Chat Room
Season 1, this is my favorite episode because it just feels like the PERFECT episode. I can't explain it, but it's the Law & Order that we love, the detectives go round and round trying to solve one case, find themselves knee deep in another, and just when you think there's no connection to the two, it doubles back to the first case, so many interviews, so many twists and turns, to me it defines the whole series.
Mom:
I'm not sure about this one, I didn't come into it at the start and I think it works better if you're kind of past the whole kids/teen pregnancy thing, one of my top 5 would definitely be A Seafaring Ancestor and a Bloomin Onion, I love that episode.

I think the pilot should always be the first episode to watch.

^^^ I second that. To me, it is always good to begin at the beginning. God bless you always!!! Holly

Seinfeld - The Contest or The Soup Nazi
Twilight Zone - The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Star Trek - the Gorn episode "Arena" is a good choice. However, if they had a negative bias against Star Trek going in, I'd choose the Hugo award winning "The City on the Edge of Forever".

The pilot/episode 1. If it wasn't good enough for someone to get into it there, how would it have been able to grab the viewer and keep them around until the "ideal introduction episode" aired in the first place?

Seinfeld - The Contest or The Soup Nazi Buddy of mine who is THE biggest Seinfeld fan that I know tried to get me into the series. He played the episode "The Contest" for me. I did laugh quite a bit. When it is on network TV, I will watch the show if nothing else is on. As for starting with the pilot: Back in 1995 (August - I was home for the summer from university), another buddy of mine thought I would enjoy the "Blackadder" series - starring Rowan Atkinson (from "Mr. Bean" fame). He started me off with "Blackadder Goes Forth", which is the 4th 'season' in the series. I'm glad he started me off there. Had he started me with the first series, I probably would not have pursued it further. Joker's Wilde

A lot of people here are saying you should always start with the pilot but Seinfeld didn't become Seinfeld until season 3 at the earliest. Good call on Blackadder. I started with season 1 and boy, it took a lot of hard will to continue but I'm glad I did. I don't know about starting all the way into the last season, I just recommend skipping 1 and starting with 2. Although I wonder if watching the show backwards (4, 3, 2) would be a fun experiment.
