This Oscar-winning performer was the narrator for a non-holiday animated TV special in the 1960s. Who was the actor, and who was the real-life famous American on whom the story was based?

Correct! James Cagney narrated the 1966 special "The Ballad of Smokey the Bear," one of Rankin-Bass' less memorable animated shows. Among other things, they got the name wrong--it's "Smokey Bear." The character, based on a real-life bear caught in a forest fire, was conceived on August 9, 1944 to serve as a symbol of fighting forest fires. He was once so famous he had his own zip code to handle his fan mail, and his solemn "Only you" TV ads used to scare me as a kid.

I know that night is upon us but itβs time to confront your fear, Marianne. You will courageously greet the dawn.
