As per usual, I've been stockpiling horror films in preparation for October, picking them up slowly as the year goes on, getting them at used book/movie stores and such, watching the occasional, but hording most like a dragon with gold (admittedly a few are leftovers from last years stockpile that I didn't get to). So everyone on the horror board, any thoughts on the following films to help me decide which ones are most important this October?
The Devil Rides Out (1968)
The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971) All the Colors of the Dark (1972)
Smile Before Death (1972) Beyond the Door (1974)
God Told Me To (1976) Shock Waves (1977)
The Uncanny (1977) House on the Edge of the Park (1980)
Next of Kin (1982)
Phenomena (1985)
Devil Story (1986) Sorority House Massacre (1986)
Spookies (1986) Blood Harvest (1987) Pledge Night (1988)
Demonia (1990)
The Guardian (1990)
August Underground (2001) You're Next (2011) La Llorona (2019)
Prey for the Devil (2022)
Smile (2022)

Phenomena (1985) - Atmospheric and has some great music.
You're Next (2011) - Really fun with an unforgettably badass protagonist. A bit overhyped but still very enjoyable.
That's all I've seen. I guess You're Next is the better of the two.

The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) - I don't remember much except the killer reveal being weird
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) - also don't remember much
Phenomena (1985) - one of my favorite Argento movies
Sorority House Massacre (1986) - not as smutty or entertaining as the title would suggest, I recall it basically being a Halloween ripoff (even by 80s slasher standards)
You're Next - my favorite slasher movie of the last 20 years
La Llorona (2019) - zzzzz
Smile (2022) - do you find people smiling creepy? This is the movie for you. It has one solid scare but the rest was underwhelming for me

The Devil Rides Out (1968) - I like this one a lot. One of my favorite horror movies from the 1960s.
The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) - It’s okay, but not one of my favorite Argento’s.
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) - I like this a little more than most. Really creepy atmosphere.
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971) - Above-average giallo mystery thriller.
All the Colors of the Dark (1972) - Average giallo. Pretty weird movie.
Next of Kin (1982) - This is a solid one, but you have to be patient with it. The 1st half is slow, the 2nd half is suspenseful.
Phenomena (1985) - Terrific movie. One of Dario Argento’s best. Great music.
You’re Next (2011) - It’s okay, but not really my thing. I know a lot of horror fans love it.
So, in conclusion, my top 3 recommendations would be:
Phenomena The Devil Rides Out The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh

The Devil Rides Out (1968) one my favourite hammer films. Good Occult suspense horror with Christopher Lee leading the way.
The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) My least favourite of Argento’s giallo work. Decent story, but lacks the visual touch.
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) Creepy, and very slow-burn. Dream-like and heavy on low-budget atmospheric grit.
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971) Well-made, but couldn’t get into it. Though I seem to be in the minority on this one.
All the Colors of the Dark (1972) A cryptic mystery, and feverish trip engulfed in kaleidoscope visuals. Enjoyed it.
God Told Me To (1976) Larry Cohen’s weirdest film. Best to know very little.
Shock Waves (1977) Atmospheric low-budget horror. On the tame side, but imagery of the Nazi zombies lingers.
The Uncanny (1977) Seen it, but memory is poor.
House on the Edge of the Park (1980) sort a rinse and repeat exercise of David Hess terrorising rich folks who had their own agendas for inviting him to their place. Nasty and unpleasant.
Next of Kin (1982) Very well shot and scored Aussie horror film. Slow build Gothic psycho drama that erupts in the backend.
Phenomena (1985) my favourite Argento alongside Inferno. Just bonkers.
Sorority House Massacre (1986) Run of the mill slasher.
Spookies (1986) Haphazard/patchwork supernatural/haunted house mayhem. Some cool looking monster designs. The backstory of the film is probably more interesting the film itself.
Blood Harvest (1987) An overly bizarre, and sketchy regional psychosexual slasher made the more interesting for Tiny Tim's starring role. Sadly everything else is beyond clunky and inchorent, but this no surprise if you're familiar with director's Bill Rebane's work.
Pledge Night (1988) Very silly supernatural slasher that spends the first hour focused on the hazing rituals before breaking free.
The Guardian (1990) The hand that rocks the cradle with a supernatural edge. Jenny Seagrove is good & the climax is pretty wicked ala Evil Dead mayhem fx and gore.
You’re Next (2011) Fast paced and brutal house siege premise with an impressive Sharni Vinson.
In order of preference; Phenomena Shock Waves God Told Me to The Devil Rides Out Spookies You’re Next Let’s Scare Jessica to Death All the Colours of the Dark Next of Kin House on the Edge of the Park Cat O’ Nine Tails The Guardian The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh Blood Harvest Pledge Night Sorority House Massacre

The Devil Rides Out - Pretty good. 7/10
The Cat o' Nine Tails - Good Morricone score, the story was solid, and I liked the ending a lot. 7/10
Let's Scare Jessica to Death - I found this one interesting and liked the score. 7/10
All the Colors of the Dark - Watched this for last years marathon and thought it was quite good. 7.5/10
God Told Me To - Interesting premise, but didn't quite stick the landing for me. 6.5/10
Next of Kin - Another one I watched last year. I mostly liked it, but it never quite came together. 6.5/10
Phenomena - Jennifer Connelly and Donald Pleasence are good and the music is really good. 7/10
You're Next - A well done modern slasher. 7/10

Thanks everyone for the responses thus far! Looking like The Devil Rides Out and Phenomena will definitely be on the agenda and likely the first week of the challenge.

I do too, but that's The Curse if LA Llarona. The one listed here is a foreign film. It was Guatemala's submission for the Oscar and was nominated for Best foreign language film at the Golden Globes. I haven't seen it, but it seems like people actually like this one.

The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) I cant really remember what happens
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) Same as above, so you could conclude that they arent memorable
House on the Edge of the Park (1980)David Hess torture and mayhem, I liked it, but its not for everyone
Phenomena (1985) My favourite Argento film, I love itm great atmosphere and music
Pledge Night (1988) Not that interesting
August Underground (2001) This is one of those films young teenagers brag about seeing because it was so edgy, then they get older and see it for the terrible made film it is
You're Next (2011) Really enjoyable
Smile (2022) They really could have done something with this, but they didnt

Smile Before Death (1972) Beyond the Door (1974)
God Told Me To (1976) Shock Waves (1977)
The Uncanny (1977) House on the Edge of the Park (1980)
Next of Kin (1982)

Devil Story (1986) Sorority House Massacre (1986)
Spookies (1986) Blood Harvest (1987) Pledge Night (1988)
Demonia (1990)
The Guardian (1990)
August Underground (2001) You're Next (2011) La Llorona (2019)
Prey for the Devil (2022)
Smile (2022)
The Devil Rides Out (1968) - I recall enjoying the book more than the film.
The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) - This seems to get a lot of flack for being too tame and conventional and it's true that horror-wise it might be a bit of a letdown, but still a decent thriller.
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971) - Another film I wouldn't classify as horror. It lacks any real scares and overall I found the plot a bit meandering, but the great final twist makes up for a lot of its shortcomings.
All the Colors of the Dark (1972) - Watchable occult thriller, I've only seen it last year, but can barely remember anything about it.
God Told Me To (1976) - Such a crazy, downright bizarre movie. It starts out as a straightforward thriller, but later goes to some places you would never expect. Phenomena (1985) - Great giallo fantastico. To me Argento's last classic (I didn't care much for Opera). You're Next (2011) - One of the better 21st century slashers which may not mean much, but it's at least fun and has a great leading lady. Smile (2022) - A bit like the more mainstream version of It Follows. I thought it started out promisingly, but became a bit dull towards the end.

"Demonia"... It was okay. If you are into these kinds of movies. Italian horror about Nuns Ghosts attacking from beyond the Grave.
I also recently watched the Fulci "Zombie" movies. Part 5 ("Killing Birds") is technically only a sequel in name only. You might want to add them to the list if you like Gorey Fulci.
