Somehow I managed to not see Castle Freak until now. It was just sitting there waiting, along with Fangoria's 2020 remake version, on AMC+, so now I've witnessed them both. It's always good to see Jeffrey Combs together with Barbara Crampton again. The story lures you in with the tragic back story of the freak, and then throws lots of gore and sex at you, sometimes in the same scene. Crazy! I've only just started the 2020 version, but it's good so far. Being the weirdo completist that I am, I'm forced to watch them both.

I kinda liked Castle Freak. It's not the best of Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs, but it's got atmosphere, a great location, and a good tone of partial silliness and partial creepiness, like a lot of the best of Stuart Gordon's work.
But I fucking hated the remake. I don't think I could really come up with much of anything nice to say about it. If I recall correctly it ends with a rather ambitious and larger idea that is a little ballsy, but everything that comes before is atrocious. It's seriously one of the cheapest looking, most amateurish, poorly shot, poorly acted, poorly written, poorly conceived, lamest movies I remember seeing in the last few years. I thought it was fucking terrible all around... and there's a really oddly pornographic sex scene which is pretty uncomfortable for such a shitty little lame movie.
It fucking sucks.
The location was good though. They didn't know how to use it, but it does have that.

I saw it during last year's challenge, it was okay. Good setting and cast.
Never saw the remake but I don't know if I will.

I thought the victims in the original movie were far more likeable. They were mostly Douchebags in the Reboot. I give them credit for giving the Freak a new design and trying something different with the ending.

The remake definitely went in new directions, and I agree, all the characters seemed pretty douchebaggish. 🤔
