Pretty impressive first-time effort from writer/director Cord Jefferson. Equal parts hilarious and thought-provoking with the analysis of how highlighting Black stories can be problematic when only one type of story sells. Some of the family drama didn't work for me fully, but I can get a sense of why it's included. Best Actor worthy performance from Jeffrey Wright. 7.5/10.

The other day I saw the trailer again and it said "December" but no sign of it.

Some of the family drama didn't work for me fully, but I can get a sense of why it's included. I did feel like they kind of overstuffed it. His mother could have altheimer's, his sister could die from a random heart attack, his dad could have killed himself, his brother could have a coke-fueled midlife crisis - but ALL of those at the same time? Did his family piss off a gypsy? In any case, I still had a great time with this. There weren't a lot of people in the audience, which was probably a good thing because I may have felt awkward as a white person laughing as hard at things in it that I did (particularly the ending with the cops). One of the best satires I've seen in a long time. Cord Jefferson wrote the best episode of HBO's Watchmen so it's cool to see him blowing up.

I enjoyed it a lot. Jeffrey Wright is such an underrated actor. I even enjoy his voice role in Marvel's What If? He is good in everything, even the bad stuff.
