I watch a lot more tv nowadays then movies, which is weird because back when I was younger I probably watched an equal amount of tv and film. Nowadays I just find tv more compelling and convenient. Anyways because I watch so much more tv I’ve gotten really used to stories being told in around 50 minutes. Obviously most shows nowadays don’t tell their entire storylines in 50 minutes, but an arc or chapter is packaged within 50 minutes.
I’ve gotten so used to that 50 or so minute run I’m starting to find it hard to watch movies. I start kinda getting tired or fed up by the second half. For example this past weekend I watched both Saltburn and The Holderovers. They were both objectively good movies. Neither one was obscenely long either with both running slightly over 2hrs. Still though I found myself getting antsy when both films got passed the 1hr mark. It’s hard to watch a story going past an hour nowadays.
What I think I like about tv is it gives you time to think about and digest the material. I like to watch a little, walk away and then come back later for more. It gives you time to know the characters and get used to the universe. I still like movies, but I just think it’s getting harder to tell a good story in just one 2hr sitting.
