The Passion Of The Christ is my fave one. The Malcolm X movie with Denzel Washington is also good.

Maybe not the best of all movies about historical figures, both concerning the end of Romanov rule in early 20tth century Russia. I love them both: first, the 1932 semi-fictionalized historical drama, Rasputin And The Empress, featuring a fine cast, including all three Barrymore acting siblings, and stunning art direction. As it was made just under two decades prior to the events and relationships it depicts, it is a gorgeous, stunning standout of a film that deserves more attention, from not only classic movie fans but those among us who love reading about modern history. The movie's director was Richard Boleslavsky.
Equally splendid, and made four decades later, Nicholas And Alexandra is a superb cinematic chronicle of the same period, filmed in color, on an epic scale, this is a sweeping and masterful motion picture. There are quibbles about its accuracy of the period it is set in, and there are surely made-up scenes, things presented that we know are not quite true to life. A friend of mine who is a history buff and holds and advanced degree in history isn't too keen about this film, as he feels that it sugarcoated the royal couple whom he regards as far less admirable than they were presented in the film. Franklin Schaffner directed this one with a sure hand.
