Is anyone excited for this thing, and if so, which events (outside of the obvious: breakdancing)?
I can take or leave the summer games (I tend to prefer the winter games) but I usually have it on in the background at least. I like events such as road and mountain biking for the extended looks at the host city/region.

I'm also more of a fan of the winter games, but I like the track and field events and I find that I'm completely in awe of the gymnastics. The gymnasts in particular, they are freakish athletes. It took me years to be able to do a single muscle-up on rings; those guys hold themselves up there with arms parallel to the floor as part of their warm up. Insanity.

Very excited. I love the games and the city, so these games will be a blast to watch. Basketball, volleyball, tennis and Athletics (track) events (particularly decathlon) are among my favorites, as well as badminton. You read that right. The Olympics are like the first day of the NCAA tournament, but for two weeks. There's always something going on, on several channels. Hell, I'm big on the opening and closing ceremonies.
Paris as a backdrop is about as good as it gets, right up there with London, Rome and Athens. (Ok Athens is a bit of a dump, but Greece was home to the original games and it has the Acropolis.) The French should make excellent hosts, considering it was a Frenchman who founded the modern games. But honestly, I've never had a bad time watching the games, summer or winter. There are always a few fun stories, whether it's continued dominance of a legend or an out-of-nowhere medalist having the performance of a lifetime. I'm a fan of competition, and nothing says competition like the Olympic Games.
When should we schedule the Flag Football watch party?

With the six-hour time difference I suppose there won’t be any live events on anymore by the time I get home in the evenings on workdays. I will certainly try to catch the highlights, and live events in the morning before I leave for work and on weekends.

I'm sure you're bummed that we still have to wait 4 years for Olympic cricket!

Sprint races, relay races, tennis, basketball, soccer and gymnastics are the big ones. I have no idea when everything will be playing, and I don't watch sports that aren't live (besides past Tom Brady games) but I'll follow the results.

No... I do like pole vaulting though. Just because it looks so mental. And I guess synchronised high diving for the same reason. And like klawrencio79 I think the gymnastics routines can be pretty mesmerising.

As for which events I am most looking forward to, it’s volleyball (both versions), but I will watch pretty much anything other than sailing and the horse stuff. I was surprised last time when I caught the skateboard competition while flipping channels and couldn’t stop watching, even though it was one of the sports that I had dismissed as of zero interest to me beforehand.

Skateboarding is pretty cool and a worthy addition. I'd recommend not being so quick to dismiss Dressage, known colloquially as 'horse dancing.' It's so absurd and crazy that such a thing exists that it's genuinely hilarious.

Excited? Not really.
I love week 1 aquatics - swim racing, it's a nightly non-stop machine of heats, semis, & finals. 8 in, 8 out; 8 right back in, etc. It's very good tv, they've aced the graphics with the flags & times 'in' the water. + Canada has always been pretty good so I can root for that. I probably also like that it's a G20 of participants... USA, France, Brazil, South Africa, China, all the bigs with male & female swimmers alike. Athletics has too many smaller nations to feel the same stakes.
As for excitement, I prefer games that are in more sporting locales, like Sydney, Vancouver, Lillehammer, etc... not just a big rich urban place like London or Paris. Beijing's infinite pocketbook made 2008 likely the finest summer games we'll see in a long while.

I hear you, but I like it when smaller nations can actually compete-- and this coming from an American, who sends an army of competitors to the Olympics each games. Don't get me wrong, being an American, I can appreciate a machine pumping out champions. But I doubt Johnny America's 8th medal of this games means as much to my nation as the medal someone who was one of three competitors sent by their nation would mean to them. To many of these athletes, the opening ceremonies will be the highpoint of their games. It's incredible that they made it this far. It's all worth celebrating to me.

Macron now all but expects Putin to terrorize the games, probably because Macron has semi-volunteered the idea of NATO troops for Ukraine.
I hope the ping pong is safe.
