Let's say when he sold the rights to sw he said this:
Any films made cannot include any starships from the original trilogy. And cannot be any returning characters at all. And put both things in a contract, you see.
Because I'm saying then, we would possibly get a sequal trilogy more like the prequels.
Then... the trilogy would have been better than what we got.
The trilogy would still have things from the original. Just not the 2 things named above you see.
And then, lucas would have a say in how they're made, at the same time not having a say in how they would be made.

Anything Lucas did would be hated at the time, often justly, then romanrasized later by nostalgia babies and Gisnep haters.

I doubt Disney would have gone for that--it would have wanted total rights--merchandising etc...

Also, as much as disney wanted to avoid making anything remotely close to the prequels.
They couldn't make a trilogy remotely as good as the prequels even if they tried.
