The movie is about a young American women who feels a calling to a convent in Italy because of a "miraculous" experience when she was a child. The story starts off interesting enough, though still somewhat typical of these types of movies. I just watched a better film that had a similar set up last year called Consecration, starring Jena Malone. Anyway, weird stuff starts happening and it is discovered that Cecilia (played well by Sydney Sweeney - though the writing of her character doesn't do her any favors) is pregnant even though she is a virgin. Speaking of her not having much to work with, all the characters in the movie are very generic.
The main problem is all of this leads to such a ridiculous conclusion that I wasn't able to take it seriously and wondered if it was supposed to be a comedy. I had heard how scary this movie was and had an ending that will shock, but I didn't have the experience at all. There are creepy moments here and there during the first half and the movie has effective atmosphere and a good score, but everything else falls flat during the final act. It really doesn't even work if you watch it as a comedy. Overall it isn't a terrible horror movie, but it certainly isn't a good horror movie either.
