the first adaptation of what Stephen King calls his scariest book. The movie does a lot right with some creepy atmosphere, shooting on location in Maine, and translating the main morality tale of the story in a well-done way, but it is let down by some absolutely horrendous acting (who is this awful actor Dale Midkiff and why is he the lead in a major Paramount Pictures production?) which leads to some scenes coming across as unintentionally funny. A remake is 2019 improves the film acting wise but is kind of worse off in all other areas. Maybe in 2049 we will finally get the definitive version of this story on screen.

Never read the book and I didn't really care for the movie the first time I saw it. On a second viewing I actually thought it was pretty good though.

Pretty good flick.
I read the book after the movie and I really liked it too. Maybe even prefer it to the film.

I liked it, it's a fairly faithful adaption. The 2019 version absolutely sucked.

I liked it, it's a fairly faithful adaption. I suppose, it's just that the tone is off. The book reads almost like a psychological/existential drama with undead people. The movie feels like a garish episode of Tales From the Crypt. And the acting is horrendous. Only Hermann Munster and a 4 year old come out looking ok.

The ending especially was pure Tales From the Crypt.
