This live action version invites the inevitable comparisons to the 1991 animated film and cannot help but suffer. Casting Emma Watson as Belle was a total misfire. Laura Osnes looks, sings and acts like she was born to play Belle but she isn't the big name Emma Watson is. She would have been perfect for this role. Not only is Watson not beautiful, she can't act and certainly cannot sing. Yes, it worked. It made a ton of money. But, unlike the 1991 film, this one will not go down as a beloved classic. The music from the 91 film is largely intact and still enjoyable, the new stuff is forgettable. Big production values. I don't think I liked a single actor in this film. It was even worse than I expected. 4/10

It's a superfluous turd of a movie that shouldn't even exist, which could be said about 90% of the movies Disney makes these days. But I digress...

Agree with everything the OP said. It was just plain terrible and catering to specific agendas. Watson was a terrible choice. Her acting and singing are bad. The Beast's CGI was even more horrible, not in a beastly scary sort of way, but just plain bad. I really don't get why a lot of people go ga-ga over an almost scene-by-scene remake. It would be much better if they took a risk and tried a new approach to the same story, like what they did with "Maleficent". But then again, "taking risk" and "Disney" are mutually exclusive. If Walt was alive he would have never agreed to such cheap cash grab tactics. The man put quality above everything else, whether it was animation quality or story quality.

Yet Emma Watson won over Hugh Jackman ( Logan), James McAvoy ( Split), Daniel Kaluuya ( Get Out), Taraji Henson ( Hidden Figures) and Hailee Steinfeld (Edge of Seventeen) for BEST ACTING HONORS at the MTV Awards It was a popular voting award but MTV itself never bothered ( or hid it) to explain how the awards were given. Emma's acceptance speech was also misleading because she never acknowledged that it was the popular vote (and not by people who are knowledgeable about acting excellence such as for the Oscars and other awards) which won her the award! She even cited that it was a historic award because it recognized the Best Actor winner regardless of gender I do like Beauty and the Beast - but it was the animated version and its original musical score which won me over. I even saw a live staging of the musical in London.

5/10 Laura Osnes looks, sings and acts like she was born to play Belle but she isn't the big name Emma Watson is. Not all of the main actors in these live-action remakes have been big names (the makers already know the movie will be a financial hit based on brand recognition).

7/10, enjoyable but falls a bit short compared to the original.
