"In the prison of the future, criminal justice will have a deadly twist."After being involved in a successful robbery, high-tech wizard Frank Warren (Rutger Hauer) realises at the absolute wrong time, that he has been stabbed in the back, by his partners in crime. As a result, his girlfriend (Joan Chen) and best friend (James Remar) have decided to split the scene, while leaving poor Frank over to the police. Having survived the lethal "gift" from his former pals, Warren gets a second chance that will see him off to an experimental camp where there are no walls or handcuffs, instead every prisoner is awarded with their very own explosive necklace, which will go off within seconds, if somebody wants to play daredevil. And if Frank wants to get even with his old "friends", he must learn a way on how to outsmart the Wedlock device and escape, but if not too careful, he could end up losing more than his head. Wedlock also know as Deadlock is a fun, explosive and well acted little sci-fi/action thriller starring Rutger Hauer, Mimi Rogers, Stephen Tobolowsky, Joan Chen, James Remar, Basil Wallace and Danny Trejo. One of the better HBO produced made to TV films with Rutgher in the lead as an unlucky criminal who is left for dead by his girl and best friend, but instead he ends up in a high-tech prison, run by a sadistic warden (Tobolowsky) and his gang of misfits, while they all do their very best to try and break Frank's spirit. Rutger is really good here, not playing the typical bad ass heroic act, but more of a clumsy/geeky vulnerable figure, that has to rely a lot on his escape plans, towards his Wedlock partner, which just happens to be Mimi Rogers. The necklase/chain that will escplode when trying to escape, does remind me of the ones used in The Running Man (1987), and sure does come with some rather nasty surprises.
