Just finished watching Hacksaw Ridge. I wish I'd watched it sooner. What an incredible movie. I never really got aboard the hype train when it first came out, but I was blown away while watching it. I just had goosebumps during almost the entire second half of the movie. In retrospect I would've liked it to win more awards, because the movie defintely deserves them. Have you seen it and what is your opinion?

Haven't seen it yet but is on my to watch list . (Why did I say Clint Eastwood directed it , sorry it was Mel Gibson! - who also directed the outstanding We Were Soldiers (2002) about the critical Battle Of La Drang, Vietnam 1965 . Clint Eastwood directed the critically acclaimed Flag Of Our Fathers (2006) about the Battle for Iwo Jima , and it's companion film Letters From Iwo Jima (2006) . I looked up some facts about Hacksaw Ridge as well as Iwo Jima .
Iwo Jima was a small heavily fortified island just 750 miles south of Tokyo during WWII . It was just 8 square miles in size . There were 21,000 Japanese soldiers protected by extensive bunkers/tunnels and well supported with tanks , artillery and anti-aircraft . The Battle for Iwo Jima began in mid-February 1945 when a US Naval Force of 450 ships landed 70,000 Marines . Nearly all of the Japanese combatants were killed in the fierce month-long battle , with only 216 Japanese taken prisoner , and a handful of surviving soldiers surrendering in the following months .
Okinawa (Hacksaw Ridge) was even worse . It was the next battle after Iwo Jima , and was the last line of defense before Japan . The Japanese had 79,000 soldiers and 30,000 Okinawan conscripts heavily protected by bunkers and tunnels . The American Fleet attacked on the 1st April 1945 and fought for nearly 3 months to capture the Okinawan Island Group . Fighting was so intense that many soldiers on both sides went crazy from the relentless battle . Only 7,000 POW's were taken with the remaining 110,000 Japanese soldiers/conscripts killed in action . All towns on Okinawa had been destroyed with 150,000 civilians killed as well .
