Didn't like this much. Slow to get going, and I hated the open-ended ending I would give it 2/10. Remake gets a 7. Don't know why I like that one so much, I just do.

I want to really check this out. Is it just an average movie?

I have seen it years ago on VHS cassette and I don't remember much about it now, besides the severed head in the toilet, lol. I definitely have to re-watch it along with some other 80's slasher classics.

I want to really check this out. Is it just an average movie? I'd say it is an above average entry into the early 80's slasher genre that's popularity— with the exception of the FT13th sequels—was coming to an end by the end of 83'. I feel that some thought has gone into it's presentation and story. I concur. It's not great but at least they tried, and somewhat succeeded in, creating genuine atmosphere instead of going the easy, overtly formulaic road of "teen comedy with some murders and blood" that most, especially later, slashers took. What I remember the best about this is the beautiful cinematography with warm, saturated colors. Sometimes this feels more like some Italian 70s horror or giallo, which of course is a high praise for a movie that belongs to such visually uninteresting genre. Terror Train, April Fool's Day, The Funhouse and maybe Hell Night are other 80s slashers that visually stand out from the flock.

I didn't know that Terror Train had Alcott aboard as cinematographer. As a big fan of Kubrick his work is of course well known to me but I guess I never paid enough attention to Terror Train's opening credits. That's amazing. The movie is definitely a mood piece with its deep shadows - often more like a silent movie aesthetically.
April Fool's Day is one of my favorite slashers. Tame for sure but I don't mind that. Good script, classy set design, cinematography & and just love the quirky humor.
Happy Birthday To Me is on my pile of films yet to be watched. Never even heard of Silent Scream before.

Been looking for this one, one of the few remaining 80's horror classics that has eluded me still.

What I enjoyed was the audio commentary track featuring stars Kate McNeil and Eileen Davidson.
