When Nicholson told the young Mat Damon that getting good grades is a paradox, what did he mean?

He just meant it didn't matter that they both did well in school.
They both ended up as criminals anyway.

So it means that studying and getting grades and graduating has no relevance in life? Is this because everybody's destiny has other plans?

thank you for your response. Do you think that if a individual has a degree but not a good job, that it makes them a failure?

thank you for your response. Do you think that if a individual has a degree but not a good job, that it makes them a failure? You are very welcome! And, no, I do not think that is true at all. No one really knows where they will end up! ( by the way the picture of a "pair of docks" was a joke, it just was not a very funny one )

Nicholson as Frank Costello: You do well in school?
Damon character Young Colin: Yeah
Nicholson as Frank Costello: Good. So did I. They call that a paradox. ----------------------------------
The fact that Costello got good grades but wound up a criminal is the paradox -- a statement that, despite apparently sound reasoning from true premises, leads to an apparently self-contradictory or logically unacceptable conclusion.
If applicable, please mark this SOLVED.

I'd like to add a question to the thread please? What did Costello say to the store owner's daughter Carmen that had her laughing in 1 second?

What bothers me more is the comic books they show when he says "do you like comic books?" are not from the right era.
