Was on ESPN's new 6 O'Clock Sportscenter with Hill and Smith.
Should Magic be obligated to hire an African American because he's African American?
Does Magic owe an obligation to 'his people' and is the criticism fair?
Thoughts?
Discuss?

I'm so effing sick of stories like this. Can't Magic just hire whoever he feels is most qualified to do the job? Can't it just be that? Can't Adele's album just be better than Beyonce's? Can't the Oscar go to the best picture and not necessarily the best black picture? ESPN just says things to get reactions. There's never any substance to what they say anymore. It's one step above (or below) TMZ.

This shouldn't even be a thing.

Agreed. This is a non story, the only people talking about this are Michael Smith and Jemele Hill and this is why I don't watch them. They are all about militant race baiting and they are 2 of the absolute stupidest and worst commentators on ESPN. How did they get a new show?

Honestly, why the fuck did ESPN put Smith and Hill on their prime time 6pm slot? They're way too divisive and will chase a lot of people away in droves. I get wanting to talk about race relations and, when it's appropriate, can produce effective results. But, I was washing the dishes while I had ESPN on in the background and, all of a sudden, I hear these two talk about why Magic didn't hire a black GM and I immediately changed channels in disgust.
If he wants to hire a black GM, who's good, then he should do it. He shouldn't be obligated to do it.

Did you mean he shouldn't be obligated to do it?

The discussion has been about whether he could have considered one, not the hire itself. There are 3 black GMs out of 30 in a league where there are (in 2015) 74.4 percent black players, 23.3 percent white players, 1.8 percent Latino players, and 0.2 percent Asian players. So the more white-heavy the GMs and owners and front office, the more the players get to feel that plantation mentality.
That said, Magic's appointment is enough at the moment and should count for something.

This shouldn't even be a thing. It isn't. The OP presented a straw man. Manufacturing outrage.

I don't think it matters whether a black man was interviewed either. His job is to put someone competent, hopefully better than competent, in the position. If he's satisfied he has the right man, no reason to kerp interviewing.
