In TFA Rey is strongly written as a Mary Sue (checking several Mary Sue types). You could even call her Gary Stu as she also has characteristics typically found in male MarySues. She is the goddess of all Sues. Hence her nickname: MaRey Sue. Mary Sue writing is about characters that are unrealistically highlighted and that get unwarranted attention in the story context, thereby compromising character backgrounds and logic. www.springhole.net/writing/whatisamarysue.htmSome examples (short list): 1. Attention: Rey gets a hug from Leia, Chewie is ignored (Rey hugged first); Rey becomes captain of MF, Chewie her copilot (Sues start from on top). Everybody loves/desires her immediately because she is so special, even light sabers and dead Jedi call out to her; etc 2. Abilities: Rey gets every ability and power up she needs to look good, including Force powers and skills to save the day (security overriding on Starkiller, stunt piloting, multiple languages, ace shooting, mechanics, stick fighting, climbing, unblemished looks and beauty etc). 3. Better at everything: Rey beats everybody at his own game: even though untrained she is better than the Master of the Ren (Kylo) with both the Force and sword fighting ("She gets more powerful every minute"); she is better than Han with the MF mechanics/engineering ("Go away ball"), better than soldier Finn with everything (How did you do that?, I don't know! It was perfect), BB8 is useless because Rey repairs everything and even opens security doors ("Girl knows her stuff"), C-3PO is not needed because she speaks all languages including Wookie, droidspeak. In the end, Rey gets Han's gun and ship, Luke's light saber and R2-droid, and Chewie as a copilot - and she finds MacGuffin-Luke: she is the SOLE HEIR and SAVIOUR of the SW UNIVERSE...

why can't you bitches leave Rey alone!
Rey is the same like Luke. Luke is a Mary Sue, not Rey!
And saying Mary Sue is sexist, because it's the name of a girl (quote D Ridley).
Leave her alone, pleeeeeeeease!!!

The Mary Sue label overall imo is unfair to women action/adventure movie actors. Male action/adventure film actors do incredible things, including in the Star Wars fanchise, and that's generally accepted by the mass audience. A female action/adventure movie actor does something amazing and then comes the negativity often imo because the actor is female.
The history of the Mary Sue label is based on that bias. The label grew among certain Star Trek fans who didn't want Uhura for instance to get more screen time because that would take time away from male characters.
So because of the bias of the label, I'm not voting in this poll.

Based on that: 1- You clearly do not understand the writing concept, or what it is about, despite there being official definitions by writing sites on this very thread. You lack concept thinking skills. 2. You historic breakdown of the trope is a blatant lie. You should be ashamed of yourself. As every reliable source will tell you: the trope (it's not label, you do not even get the terms right) is based on a parody story from 1974 by Paula Smith making fun of such characters in fanfiction, it applies regardless of sex. The shortest breakdown, so that you do not have to read: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSdf4kMvSyA

Is the MarySue label biased in favor of male characters and to the detriment of women characters? Yeah there's still probably some truth to that. But I think there's much more at work here when it comes to the MarySue issue. And that's why I don't have a problem with using the term.
What I'm talking about is that I think audience tastes have progressively refined over the decades when it comes to MarySues. They've become less and less universally popular.
As evidence let's talk about the comic book world. DC used to rely exclusively on the MarySue formula when it came to its heroes. But at one point they began to experience a steady decline in popularity. That was until Frank Miller introduced the 'Dark Knight' Batman. Here was a reinvented Batman who was not universally loved, respected, and envied. His enemies were more legitimate threats. Batman was a more morally grey and conflicted character who crossed the line to achieve "the means to an end". This new non-MarySue Batman was an instantly popular character. In fact most of DC's current comic book and movie success is built on similar hero archetypes and environments that was founded by Frank Miller's Batman.
Then let's look at Marvel. It was just another struggling comic book publisher until the creation of Spider-Man. He was a new hero who was not made popular by his particular powers... well that was part of it. But it had much, much more to do with him not being a MarySue hero. He was plagued with the typical problems of a teenager. He was plagued with the typical problems of being an orphan who was being raised by an elderly single parent. And going beyond a guy who just blended into the background in his non-hero persona like Clark Kent, Peter Parker was fairly unpopular and bullied. He often barely won fights or even lost against super villains in the earlier years. That one non-MarySue character lifted Marvel to becoming the chief and only rival of DC comics.
The Rey character is clearly a MarySue Force user if not a total MarySue within the context of the Star Wars "universe". And TFA didn't deliver any exposition to diffuse that label and perception. Now maybe some or all of that was purposefully by design and TLJ will bring revelations that deconstruct that stigma and marry her abilities to the lore in a legitimate fashion. But as regards who Rey is in TFA, yeah she's a MarySue. And male or female character, it's just not everyone's taste anymore in a hero. In fact some people are flat out turned off by MarySues regardless of sex.
