Apart from his prowess on battle field, his another great quality was that he loved and respected his wife a lot. His wife has been called as one of the most graceful women in the seven kingdoms. At one point of time, Lady Joanna is described as his trusted counsellor . This is very different than most other relations involving strong men and their wives described in the books. Randyll Tarly for example loved his wife but didn't respect her as much as to seek a trusted counselor in her. Lord Stannis neither loved nor respected his wife. Lady Joanna's influence on Tywin was such that people said that Tywin ruled the Seven Kingdoms as Hand, "but was ruled at home by his lady wife."

Sure he loved his wife and all, but I don't give him much credit for that. A lot of terrible people throughout history had a handful of people they loved. He still created atrocities that stood out even in Westeros for their brutality.
To get a good idea of a person's character, look at how they treat people lower than them on the social ladder. Dany, Edmure, Stannis, Arya, and a handful of others are the only ones who treat commoners as people.

Sure, he was not the best of human being and in fact I dislike him overall. But as my fav character King Stannis said: 'A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward.' I will add Davos to your list as one of the better humans in the books/show.

It would be easier to repsect him if he did actually get around to doing any good acts. I only excluded Davos because I was speaking of characters born noble. He's probably the best overall person in Westeros.

If Tywin was ruthless his whole career, I'm not sure what kind of influence she even had on him.

Tywin was not as bad as people make him out to be. Sure, he has done terrible things, but so has everyone in power on this show. He never did anything out of some kind of sick enjoyment like Ramsey or Joffrey. He does things because he has to and everything he does he does to protect his family and house. Now he is kind of a dick to Tyrion, but in his defense, everyone is. He is a dwarf in that world and gets no respect because of it. He also orchestrated the Red Wedding, but he did have a point with his "sacrifice lives" speech he gave to Tyrion. He kept everyone in check and to be in that kind of power, you need to be kind of a dick sometimes.

The sht he condoned happening there were horrible even by Westerosi standards. Then there was the sht he had his minions do to Elia and her kids, and the gangrape he ordered of Tysha. Most of the Lannisters were actually decent to Tyrion, with Tywin, Cersei, and Joffrey as the only exceptions. He was a terrible person, that's all there is to it.

Tywin always showed great pride in his family. His wife included. Even most times with Tyrion he displayed the expectations of a Lannister even if his physical form and frequenting of whores put a dent on that pride.

I know Tywin did terrible things, but so did Stannis, Robert, Dany, etc. No leader on this show has been completely noble except Ned and he made dumb decisions that got him killed.

Tywin cared about the Lannister family name, but didn't give a fook about the Lannisters as people.

But it's kind of byproduct of caring about the name that he wants what's best, or what he thinks is best, for his children.
