A masterpiece of SF noir and I have never seen anything else quite like it. The director's cut is well worth watching, adding small scenes that add depth to characters. Along with Jurassic Park, I think the best SF film of the 90s. Interesting to find Roger Ebert did a commentary for the dvd/blu ray. 10/10

9/10 - Great movie. I love the blend of mystery and science fiction. I also love the music and the unique editing style. My favorite movie of 1998.

A masterpiece. One of my favorite films.
I can't give it a full 10/10 because of a few minor issues. That completely unnecessary scene where Jennifer Connelly's character is singing in a nightclub, for instance. The song was totally unmemorable (I bet you don't even remember the scene), and the singing was bad. There are also several places where the plot is a little hard to follow.
So, 9.5/10

A-
Hadn't watched it in nearly 20yrs.... + I will be listening to Roger Ebert's dvd commentary soon enough, I'm very curious what he's taking time to point out. Good on him naming it his #1 of 1998, rather than picking out of a hat an Oscar nominee like too many other ppl.
My one mild quibble, & maybe it's newer Hollywood bias, the semi-reveal comes sooner than I recalled, maybe 25-35 minutes in? I also mis-remembered this release same time as The Matrix, which can play like a credible thematic double feature. To that point, Dark City is the richer, more satisfying cinematic achievement than The Matrix - hot take or not, I prefer steampunk to CG kung fu.
