Road to Perdition (2002) ; BY FAR! ; very few movies can even challenge this one. it's a crime it's not in the IMDb Top 250 as it wipes the floor with the vast majority of movies in the Top 250.
-Road to Perdition (2002) - 10/10 (within my Top 10 movies at the very least and probably Top 5) -Eastern Promises (2007) - 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up. i used to think this was a solid 8/10 at one point, which made it amongst my favorite movies, but has since taken a hit as while i still like it, it's nothing special.)

Popeye Doyleone of the best moments in the movie is that general scene ; everything came together really well. Paul Newman's best movie and his last one.

Agreed. Road to Perdition is in my personal Top 5, and while I don't expect everyone to love it as much as I do, the fact that it isn't at least in the top 250 is puzzling to me. The score, the cinematography, the story, the performances; everything you want from a drama is on display here at top quality.

Road to Perdition. Both are great movies but Road to Perdition reonates better with a wider audience and has more appeal.

As a huge Cronenberg fan, I can easily say Road to Perdition is the better movie. I really enjoyed Eastern Promises, but Road is practically a masterpiece with better performances, great cinematography, and heartbreaking climax.

Road to Perdition is just on a different level so I'll go with Mendes' film here. Also Jude Law was brilliant as the villain . When he tells Hanks' character what he does for a living ("I shoot the dead") Gives me chills every time .
Road to Perdition 9/10 Eastern Promises 7/10

Rey Kahuka Yep! ; I did not know there was another person around here who likes Road to Perdition as much as i do (basically Top 5 for both of us(Top 10 at the very least for me)). but here you are it blends the score and visuals really well and has solid acting etc. a rare under-appreciated gem. or look at it this way... the vast majority of movies don't have a score that really stands out but this is one of the small amount that do as i am sure it has an effect on amping up the overall movie for me. but yeah, it seems to fly off the radar as i imagine if you asked a random person what their favorite Tom Hanks movies are this would probably not be as mentioned as quite a few others even though for me it's my favorite of his with only The Green Mile (also within my Top 10 movies) giving it a challenge (i plan on re-watching The Green Mile before this year is finished as it's been nearly three years since i last re-watched it and need to make sure it's 10/10 status remains). basically out of the ten movies i give a 10/10 there is only four not in the Top 250 which are... Training Day (2001)/Road to Perdition (2002)/Open Range (2003)/Lord of War (2005). but speaking of these movies... i think Lord of War is another one of those movies that has a solid score and amps up the movie. Open Range is the lowest rated of my 10/10's with a 7.5/10 average and that seems to fly off the radar but it's pretty much a four way tie for my #1 Western ever along with For a Few Dollars More/Good Bad Ugly/Once Upon a Time in the West. but speaking of favorite Tom Hanks movies the only ones of his i think stand out from the pack are... 1.Road to Perdition (2002) - 10/10 (Dec 30th 2015 is my most recent viewing) 2.The Green Mile (1999) (Sep 23rd 2014 is my most recent viewing) 3.Forrest Gump (1994) - 8/10 (Aug 21st 2014 is my most recent viewing) 4.Captain Phillips (2013) - 7/10 (Sep 8th 2014 is my most recent viewing) there used to be more (i.e. Saving Private Ryan/Big/Cast Away/Catch Me If You Can) but they have since taken a hit for me where as Road to Perdition, if anything, has gotten stronger for me based on my most recent re-watch. with that said... i would assume The Green Mile/Forrest Gump are amongst some of the general public's favorite Tom Hanks movies but i would not expect people to like Road to Perdition/Captain Phillips as much as some of his other movies on a more mainstream level. p.s. i plan on re-watching The Green Mile/Forrest Gump/Captain Phillips before this year is finished as for me, as a general guideline, i re-watch ALL movies i score a 7 or higher (which is currently 196 movies) at least once every few years or so just to make sure they remain favorites. it will be interesting to see if The Green Mile remains a 10/10 for me or drops off as i mainly worry a little bit of it dropping off because the directors other movie, The Shawshank Redemption, dropped off for me on Feb 2nd 2016 as it was a 10/10 and is now a 7.5-8/10. still, it remains within my Top 107 movies but it was amongst my very elite not all that long ago. o well, a fair amount of movies have dropped off over the years for me. but, to look at the positives, that just makes the ones that remain strong all that much better/more appreciated. @jakesully Yep. one of the better villains from movies in general. PreachCaleb Yeah, that is one of the best moments in the movie to and not only that it's one of the best moments visually and little things like hearing the water swashing around in the background is one of those little things that enhance the moment. basically that scene and the one Jimmy Doyle posted above (although it's a bit trimmed in the gif file above) are basically the peaks of the movie. some powerful moments ; it's quite rare movies come along with that kind of powerful scenes that really grab you which is why it's my 'go to' movie when i think great cinematography combined with great moments in the movie because you can find a fair amount of movies that have solid visuals and all of that but to find them blended into a great moment in a movie like this movie is very difficult. p.s. just to be clear i am referring to the part where Jude Law shoots Tom Hanks in the back and proceeds to take his picture

Both my top movie for the given years and a closer comparison than some are giving credit, I'll take Road to Perdition slightly over EP...

I'll throw a vote to Eastern Promises. It's a little grittier, and Mortensen is excellent in it.

Road to Perdition.
I admire Mortensen's performance in Eastern Promises. Mueller-Stahl was good as well.

Eastern Promises.
it's beautifully paced especially for a 90 minute feature.
