I think it's funny how in "THE SHINING", Scatman Crothers character travels all the way from Miami to Denver and then from Denver to the Hotel and then 5 minutes after he gets there, Jack Nicholson puts an axe into his chest.

That's the worst part of the film in my opinion. In the book he plays a much more important role. I think Kubrick screwed up on that part. While I love the film, it's a miss on an otherwise perfect film.

Totally hated that....Seemed a tad lazy..Halloran should have been left as the hero he was in the novel...

I believe Kubrick came to the conclusion that someone needed to die horribly in his horror movie.

I believe Kubrick came to the conclusion that someone needed to die horribly in his horror movie. That was the exact reason. He couldn't kill any of the family members and he was waiting on killing jack for the end.

Stanley Kubrick could have just wanted to do it for the shock value.

I think Jack and the movie as a whole would be a lot less scary if no one was killed by him, so I think Kubrick made the right call. Yeah, it sucks for Dick that he went all that way, but it also made his death that much more shocking.
