I recall two episodes that were very sexist and would not be acceptable today.
One was where this girl liked Opie but he didn't like her because she was smarter and more athletic than he was. She was told to 'dumb down' so that Opie would like her. She did, so Opie gave her a 'second chance'.
The same situation was played in an episode where this woman liked Goober but he didn't like her because she was smarter than him (who wasn't?). So she was advised to pretend to be damn near retarded to make him feel smarter than she was.
Those are the only two shows that were offensive rather than funny.
If a woman has to dumb-down for a man, he's not worth it and probably piss stupid.

What, you wouldn't dumb yourself down for Goober? How about Gomer?

One of my favorite shows of the 60's. Yes, things were certainly different. I remember that people were all upset with the Dick Van Dyke show because Mary Tyler Moore had the audacity to wear pants!(Even though they slept in twin beds)! I love they early Andy Griffith shows with Barney. They kind of lost me when they went to color, and no Barney. Andy became an old grump after that.

The Andy Griffith Show is truly hilarious and extremely well written. It is a member of that very small club of shows that ended while they were still at the top of the ratings.

Another episode that would not pass muster is one that also featured Goober. Goober is going on vacation so his girlfriend Flora takes over for him at the gas station. While he's gone, Andy and Floyd decide to get some gasoline and are shocked to see how busy the station is, much busier than when Goober was there. Then Flora comes out in tight slacks and a somewhat tight top. Andy and Floyd don't say anything, but they watch while all the men leer and make suggestive comments to her. It also turns out she's good at the business part of the job.
Actually, I'm thinking that might be the one where a girl who is dating Goober is told not to be so smart and efficient so as to make him feel better.

That sounds like something you could see on any number of current sitcoms. It's nothing that wouldn't pass muster on TV today.

Well, actually, I was referring to the part where the men were ogling Flora while she wiped the windows of their cars. Someone upthread wrote something about an episode where a girl was told to pretend she wasn't good at sports to not make Opie feel bad and then another one where Goober's girlfriend was told to pretend to be dumb. I remembered the one about Opie, but couldn't remember anything like that about Goober. Then when I was writing the description of the episode where Flora took over while Goober was on vacation, I thought that must be the one.

My point was that today that would be considered sexist and "problematic" by many people.

Too many people today have a stick up their butt about everything. They could still do it today, but the men would get called out and ridiculed. If they did the show today, they would have to have an episode where Ernest T. Bass wants a sex-change operation, and all of Mayberry would have to accept and encourage it.

Men ogling women is troubling and problematic? Have you ever seen 2 and a half Men? Wasn't problematic for that show.
