This is not the first video on the subject but it goes further in establishing parallels between characters and historical persons:
… and I like the thumbnail.
In his original outline, GRRM planned to have Robb kill Joffrey in battle, which would have completed the parallel with Edward of Westminster.
The parallel between Richard III and Ned Stark goes one step further: both were maligned in the theater. Ned was also made to confess he had planned to kill Joffrey to take the throne himself, like Richard III is believed to have killed Edward V and his younger brother after he had both declared illegitimate.
If Littlefinger does manage to take the throne and marry Sansa, he will be the parallel to Henry Tudor who became Henry VII and married Elizabeth of York. His having Joffrey assassinated would further parallel the speculation that Henry Tudor, not Richard III, had the princes murdered in the tower. Henry VII was greedy in terms of finances, which perfectly fits the Master of Coins and brothel keeper who "doesn't like bad investments".
I wonder if Cersei will be offered the possibility of exile by Varys. This is what Louis XI of France did for Margaret of Anjou. Louis XI had a network of spies and was nicknamed "the Universal Spider". Legend says he liked to keep his former, captured enemies in small cages and visit them. I wish we'd seen Varys talk to his sorcerer in his box a couple of times along the seasons…
