My all time favorite. Incidentally, I had the VHS as a kid with this cover art, and I thought that my brother had taken a pen and drawn all those stairs on the box, lol. I LOVE this movie. I don't know why it's not famous, I don't know why it's not remembered better than it is. To me this was not just some B old dark house movie, this was an instant classic. As a child I found Agnes Moorehead's closing line to be very profound and it stuck with me for life. The Bat is single handedly THE movie villain that has given me more nightmares than any other, clear into my teen years. And I think part of what makes it so scary is he's just a man, he's not an unrealistic monster like Michael Myers or Jason or Freddy, he's a human being smart enough to break into your house, murder you, then escape, and not get caught, which is a very frightening aspect because that is a real life scenario. I love all 3 versions of The Bat but this will always be my favorite, it's so drastically different from the others and that's why it's so great. I especially love that here, Lizzie Allen's character was a strong and brave woman, unlike the previous depictions who would scream and duck under a bed.

It's not anything very special to me. The most rememberable thing was The Bat's claw weapon. The Bat is okay.

Agreeably taut, old-dark-house mystery with some nice acting. Those creaky atmospherics of house adds to the suspicious mood.

Maybe it's not so famous as it's the second remake of the movie/novel: The Bat (1926) the original (a silent) www.imdb.com/title/tt0016629/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3The Bat Whispers (1930) www.imdb.com/title/tt0020668/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 Not seen the 1959 version but reading its premise it is indeed another adaptation of the same story. I love the original, the 1930 version obviously came way too soon after it and is very much a copy of the original but this time a talkie (hence the addiction of whispers).

I always thought it was weird how they remade it so soon after, but I always loved it. I had the Sinister Cinema version on tape when I was 11, which a lot of stuff is cut out of it, and some stuff you could tell there was a cut but you attribute that to their less than perfect editing system 70 years ago, but I loved it. Then I got a copy that was full, couldn't believe how much stuff was cut out, though I still prefer the SC version. I wish they'd re-release it on DVD, onto something that actually works, charge $30 for a copy in a cardboard jacket, and at full volume you can still barely hear it.

Anything with Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price in it can't be bad. I saw The Bat at the movies years ago, when I was just a tyke. Even back then (late 50s), I realized that Vincent Price was THE man when it came to horror films. If he was gonna be in a movie, you can bet it would deliver the goods.
I've seen seen The Bat on a great double-bill DVD with House on Haunted Hill. It's a good "old house" thriller, but the killer was easy to figure out. Lots of red herrings, though!

'The Bat Whispers' is one of the most extraordinary, visionary pictures of the early talkies, helmed by troubled maverick Roland West of Ohio.

I thought you were talking about a Bela Lugosi movie but it's called The Devil Bat. I have seen The first remake The Bat Whispers but I don't recall it being very distinctive. I will give the Vincent Price version a chance if the opportunity presents itself.

Yeah don't get me wrong the 1930 version is good but I saw it after I had seen the original at least twice so it didn't offer anything new for me. I don't think more dialogue was needed even though I do see the advantage not having to read intertitles. Anyway I don't know if you have seen The Cat and the Canary (1927) which is even more atmospheric (and more of a horror) than The Bat. That one got a talkie remake in 1939 but the annoying thing is they just talked too much in there which brought the atmosphere down. Also they dumbed down the story and one of the male leads I found really annoying.

I have actually seen both versions of The Cat and the Canary, I like both versions, the original is creepy, and the remake fits into the late 30s/early 40s trend of horror comedies much like the original versions of The Bat also were. Though I think the 1939 version was also comparable to Bob Hope's later picture, The Ghost Breakers, which I've always liked, and a couple years ago I read the original play of from 1915 which was originally a melodrama, go figure.

Amazon was running a sale on DVDs several years ago, and I got this as one of three Vincent Price movies crammed onto a single DVD. "The Bat" is a pretty good movie.

Love The Bat 1959 version ever since I first saw it just a few years ago.
Since it's public domain, many lesser quality versions are out there, so I had to pick up the laserdisc version which has the widescreen aspect ratio and is the full 80 min original release.
It's from Roan Group, who typically made excellent LD pressings, and also has The Bat Whispers on it.

So annoyed that this very movie came on TCM yesterday morning, but I couldn't watch it because . . . and this is SO rude . . . I had to go to work.
Maybe they'll have it on OnDemand. Or something.

1920s version or 1959 version, I'm really surprised this movie hasn't been remade since, but there's just no way it could be done again and have any justice done to it.
And am I the only one who's annoyed when TCM shows it because they actually CUT A SCENE out of it? TCM who prides themselves on being 'uncut and commercial free'.
And I'm sorry, not all movies are better in widescreen, this has been a full screen movie since it was first put on video, that's how it works, widescreen looks too weird for this one.

It's fun. And it's a good movie to watch with someone who likes suspense. But nothing too scary and not gory. I have it on DVD. I'll watch it around Halloween sometimes.
