Any competent SF writer would point all this out immediately but Hollywood thinking being what it is, he would probably be politely shown the door just as quickly. This is why most big budget SF movies suck. The fact that Hollywood also uses the term "sci-fi" also shows the contempt in which they hold science fiction. They think they can make these movies "fun" but they always show the pompous bore these so-called writers are. It's escapism. To me. I don't really go to movies anymore to be anything more than entertained. And it's waning. I seek the old and the ancient stories; the only substance nowadays. I suspect that most producers of SF movies have never read much written SF. This may explain the hard time most SF writers have when dealing with Hollywood movie and TV producers. The recent adaptation of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" is one of the more depressing examples of movies getting it wrong. It should have been called "Invasion of the Point-missers". Harlan Ellison has much to say on the subject, most of it terrifying and all of it hilarious.

I have insomnia and am bored. Amuse me. It would amuse me greatly if you named some really huge plot holes. 'The Phantom Menace'!
The plot hole being 'Why'!

There's a scene in Superman 4 where he is fighting Nuclearman on the moon. Nuclearman buries Superman underground and leaves. Then Superman pops up out of ground and starts gasping for air. There's one problem. There's no atmosphere on the moon. So what was he trying to breathe?

To the Moon?
