MAX is a boy with a journal all of the things he imagines. His creations include 2 super-heroes. One can generate and control lava, which is why her name is LAVAGIRL. The other can generate and control water, which is why his name is WATERBOY. What's that? It's SHARKBOY? Why? Because he can also breathe under water and communicate with and summon water animals? That's too general, so his name should be FISHBOY. Anyway, it turns out that they're real and they need his help to save the dream world. They take MAX to a planet called... Well, let's just say the name is something we sometimes do while we're asleep. Something that can leave a stain. Why are you putting that face? Oh, no! It's PLANET DROOL! Get your minds out of the gutter! We can use the word "Dream" to refer to the images we see while we are sleeping or to the wishes we have for the future... but that doesn't mean that both uses of the word are the same. Quite the opposite, actually. The things that happen inside our mind don't have to be logical, but we choose to be realistic when we think about the future. Well, the pressure of the possible negative outcomes makes that choice feel like an obligation, but at least we're aware of what we do. We don't control what happens when we're asleep. That's the main (but not only) reason why this movie doesn't work: Robert Rodríguez doesn't seem to understand this difference, so the lessons he tries to teach make no sense. ------------------------------------- You can read the full review in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian) and/or watch the video review:

The movie that makes Spy Kids 3-D look like Return of the Jedi by comparison. I actually prefer this to Spy Kids 3D but both are awful. It does make the first 2 Spy Kids movies and Shorts look like Return of the Jedi though.

Critics maybe, but they are actually very poorly rated on imdb and rightfully so imo. I watched both for the first time recently and I think they are both below average films. I am very surprised critcs were nice to them tbh.

I wish I could say the same but I don't even think it's effective at being what it is. I actually slightly prefer Spy Kids 2 in fact. It's a bit more fun.

I am very surprised critcs were nice to them tbh. Critics are more trustworthy though. I don't love any of those movies, but I can objectively see why someone would: They're light-hearted, funny, thrilling and packed with creative visuals and nice messages for the kids.
