From just reading any online message board, there is overwhelming consensus that Doctor Who became completely unwatchable tripe by the time “Bill” showed up during the Calpaldi era.
We can discuss and debate whether or not the show will continue to be unwatchable tripe under Chris Chibnall’s watch (in my opinion, the jury is out and I will wait to gather more information before I pass judgement, though I consider it to be a monumental task to try and salvage NuWho at this point, given how utterly Moffat has destroyed any credibility the show has left and alienated the vast majority of long time viewers)
However, a topic that gets considerably LESS attention is when did Doctor Who BEGIN to suck? The current decline that has utterly decimated the show and lead the latest desperate “stunt casting” to try and create “buzz” and get people to check it out again had to START somewhere.
So Whoivans, when was the FIRST time you watched nuWho and had this feeling of uncertainty, going “hmmm… this just isn’t fun or satisfying like it used to be. Something is wrong…” ?
My best guesstimate is around the time of “A Good Man Goes to War”. The introduction of the awful “Paternoster Gang” and the BBC then pretending that fans loved these worthless one-dimensional SJW characters and were begging for more appearances from them was an ominous sign that the series had begun its downhill slide.
What say you, fellow Whovians?

I'd say Death In Heaven, except I quite liked Season 9. But that S8 finale was just an ugly mess and uncomfortable to watch. I remember watching that and thinking the show would struggle to recover. I also really disliked Deep Breath. "We're married," was an amusing throw away line in The Snowmen, but for some reason it was made that episode.

It actually started to SUCK back in the classic series when Sylvester McCoy took over the role. 'NuWho' aka 'DWINO' has ALWAYS SUCKED! I disagree, I thought McCoy was an improvement over Colin Baker, and they tried to make McCoy's stories darker and weightier than the silly fluff during the Colin Baker era (and it was impossible to take Baker's Doctor seriously in that costume that looked like he was appearing on a show aimed at 5 year olds) I can't say NuWho has "always sucked", but I would agree the companions all being 21st century women from London (many of whom have annoying black boyfriends even though the UK's population is only like 5% black or something) has been consistently bad since the 2005 revival. But I would say it was at least watchable until "Bill" showed up.

In reality mostly everything after Caves of Androzani (1984).

In reality mostly everything after Caves of Androzani (1984). That's ironic, Caves of Androzani is considered one of the "greatest" Doctor Who episodes of all time. Since I haven't seen much of Peter Davison's era besides that and The Five Doctors, its hard to me to judge its quality. But Davison was always a pretty bland Doctor in the limited time I've seen him in the role. You make a good point though, since Colin Baker took over next and classic Who never recovered from that. Ironically I think the much ridiculed 1996 TV movie is far better than most of the drivel we've been getting lately. Shame we never got the "McGann era" of Doctor Who. Christopher Eccleston's lone season hasn't aged well (its very 2005ish) but he seemed to have a gravitas that the later Doctors lacked, and felt like a three dimensional character to me. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened it he continued the role long-term. They went with the maniac David Tennant after that, and while he was a blast and you could tell he was having fun with the role, it was never quite the same afterwards.

The repetitiveness started at about season 3, I guess. But at least there were always several episodes that made it all worth while, interesting twists and turns. There were none this season.

I actually like David Tennant but shortly after he showed up is when the show went downhill fast. I think it was the show runners that ruined it.

For the classic series, I would say it started to suck with The Pirate Planet. I can't comment on the new series as I've never seen it.

I would say when fangirls started gushing over how "hot" the Doctor was and that he should always be a young looking man. I'm pretty sure that's why we got Mart Smith after Tennant. Smith was the worst Doctor ever I thought. He just annoyed me. Then when Capaldi was announced I heard some fangirl went and made a rant video on YouTube about how Capaldi was too old and that the Doctor is supposed to be young. Thankfully she was called out on it and true fans gave her the bitch slap she needed. You can't call yourself a real fan if you didn't even know the Doctor started out old. I doubt they even really followed the lore of Doctor who. They probably just watched the Doctor and blocked everything else out.

It could be the same time a lot of franchises start to suck. That's when the no talent hipsters take over and decide they want the show to be something completely different from what made it great.
