If his movies had a little more conciseness and coherency, I would enjoy them better.

I would imagine when a director is dissed it's probably mostly because they have become too popular and there are quite a few who feel they are nothing special. while i don't think he sucks or anything for sure he's definitely overrated as the only movie of his of any real worth for me is The Prestige (2006) as everything else gets way to much credit.

I dont hate him-but the dialogue in his movies is often fake sounding. In Inception he has Michael Caine say to DiCaprio "You are here to ask me for one of my students..blah blah."
I remember in movies when character actions didnt need to be explained in advance.
His action scenes are not particularly exciting.
His big fault is not really his own--like JK Rowling he is a corporation-created artist. They tell the public he is important. The public is not making their own decision on it.
Sure they see his movies but we dont know if anything is inflated by our "trustworthy" media and it is not like people have a choice--they either watch his Batman movie or a robot movie or a Disney movie. Its not like 40 years ago when you had dozens of films to choose from.
He is similar to Atom Egoyan and Margaret Atwood in Canada. The media here tells us that they are the most important artists in Canada. They have said this for decades.
The public has no say in it.
Corporate-elites have ordained Nolan as the important artist.
Is this what they did in the Soviet union? telling people what to think, what to believe? Jeez-no wonder Hungary, Poland, Czechs and Slovakians despise them now.

I really enjoy his work. I just usually hate discussing his work because the Nolanites and Anti-Nolanites hyperbolize everything about everything he has a connection to. If you express a balanced opinion with both praise and criticism both groups go berserk.

I don't think most people who say they hate Nolan actually hate the man. Rather, they disagree with the adoration people express towards his work. Saying "I hate Nolan" is just a simple way of saying, "I don't agree with the critical and popular response his films receive.

I think that Christopher Nolan is 1 of the Top 5 Best Directors in the World as of Today!

No one in real life hates him. It's just people on the internet who think hating what everyone likes is cool and "badass". Congratulations! Your logical fallacy is anecdotal.

People rather loath Nolanites than Nolan as a director. How could you reasonably hate his work in a world of M Bay or JJ Abrams? His fans are usually intellectual nudists and fanboy fanatics though, very annoying.

I think he's great. "Memento" and "The Prestige" being my favorites from him. He gets the expected amount of flack because of his success and popularity...superhero fans are insane. His Dark Knight movies illustrate what I think turns some people off. His big-budget films tend to be accessible, but sometimes feel cold. I can't put my finger on it, but I think it has something to do with the dialogue. Many lines are either exposition or "trailer" lines. His tone (don't know if the right word) can at times feel emotionless...more like watching a really well-made machine rather than a piece of art.
I didn't care for "Inception" for this reason. It was beautifully made, but felt to me like it was trying to be bigger and profound than what it was. I fell asleep in the theatre actually. Apprehensive, but saw and loved "Interstellar" which corrected the emotionless tone I got from "Inception." Overall, I like most of his stuff, with his weaker entries still being damn fine crafted movies.
Said it before though, his best work is ahead of him. He's young and is in the position to make more or less anything he wants. I don't think it will happen, but let's cross our fingers and hope he doesn't pull a "Jupiter Ascending" on us.

I really don't understand the hate. I get his movies not being someone's thing, but it seems like people love to hate his work. i thought most people loved him

Also, I think there could be a misconception that he's made the same movie over and over because he's developed something of an ensemble with returning cast and production people. Michael Caine, Hans Zimmer, etc. Personally, I love it, and makes it interesting when he zeroes in on an actor he doesn't frequently use...Leo, Hugh Jackman, McCoughnahey, etc. I get the feeling he's a particularly good director to his actors.

Same reason why people bash U2. Popularity.
But Nolan has some sycophantic fanboys who make you want to hate his films though. Or you just say you despise his films to elicit a reaction since it's pretty easy to get Nolanites all wound up

Much of it is distaste of his fanbase, not of him.

He's critically and commercially successful; ergo, he has haters.
