Some people are feared in battles and some people are feared because they have that iron personality. There are only a few people who have been described by GRRM as inspiring fear by their gaze. 3 I remember after reading the books are: 1. Lord Eddard Stark 2. Roose Bolton 3. Lord Tywin Lannister GRRM has often described how the whispery voice of leach Lord would send a chill down anyone. Similarly, Lord Stark had that personality that evoked respect. Jaime was sitting on Iron Throne after killing the mad king, Lord Stark walked in and saw him sitting on iron Throne. He didn't need to utter a word. His look was enough to make Jaime feel uncomfortable.

I wonder how much of a silly romantic trope that is. I would bet he got that from the description of Philip the Fair in The Accursed Kings.

Tywin. It's the eyes. I get the same feel from Fred Dalton Thompson, I don't know what it is. Some people just leave me unsettled.

Ned Stark wasn't made to look intimidating in the show. He mostly has a benevolent aura and can look worried or concerned but barely ever threatening. Tywin and Roose do have this: I played around and looked for Philip the Fair in the two adaptations which were made of The Accursed Kings:
