It just occurred to me that Capaldi was announced and then interviewed in front of a live audience, while Whittaker was shown in character in a prefilmed trailer. Is it possible that the BBC was afraid of what the reaction might be? By skipping the live audience, you avoid the potential of Whittaker being booed (or other disappointed reactions.)
Does anyone remember what Smith's and Tennant's announcements were like? I wasn't a DW fan back then.

I actually thought that was a great way to introduce Capaldi. I was so happy when they announced it was him. I do think they probably were nervous about doing something like that this year. I think it wouldn't have gone well if they had done the same this year.

The reaction would have depended on whether the introduction took place in front of a crowd of Doctor Who fans or a crowd of butthurt broflakes.
