I saw a show over 50 years ago that I cannot place. I think it must have been an installment in an anthology series. A man is running for high office, I think governor of a state, but it may have been for the U.S. Senate. His opponent breaks a news item meant to destroy him late in the campaign, like a day or two before the election. It is considered scandalous, at least at the time. Something like he fathered a child outside of his marriage or that he was gay. He decides to handle it differently than usual. He calls a press conference or gives a speech and basically instead of denying the accusation, he sort of embraces it as true. After the speech aides are surprised and he explains that wasn't time to work through the damage, and this was his best chance to get past it. He then wins, proving his wisdom correct.

Actually, could it be the film Advise & Consent (1962)?

The difference is that in the book and film the character denies the claim against him. Also I remember it being an actual election, not a confirmation hearing for Secretary of State.

I don't remember enough plot for a movie.
