What a strange phenomenon! No matter what message board I peruse, I find people who are nasty just for nastiness sake. When I first signed up here, and it was literally a day or two after the board was created, there was a poster here who called herself "Silent Siren." Without FAIL, her postings were nasty, demeaning, mean-spirited and just completely reprehensible. She'd start threads that had nothing whatsoever to do with "Internet Media," and when people questioned the reason for those threads, she'd freak out on them. Usually, she got a few others to join in, because--and this is what I thought was very strange--she'd already achieved over 500 postings in literally two or three days!
That's when reaching 500 designated you as "God," and believe me, she acted like it. Someone eventually reported her (I've a feeling it was several people, actually), and rather than "tone down" her rhetoric, she got pissed, deleted her account, and with it all her messages.
I thought the place would be better off without her, but every now and again, I read posts from people who have apparently picked up where she left off. They answer every question with a snark, call people names and denigrate them at every turn. They'll posts lists like "the 50 Greatest Films of the Reagan Administration," and if you dare question why the thread exists, they'll rip you a new asshole. And like before, there'll usually be other toadies who'll join in.
I really don't like reporting people, and I hate to put posters on "ignore." Why can't we all just post like fans, like friends, and leave the snark and the poisonous barbs at the old IMDB? Really, I thought this place would be different, but it's slowly sliding toward the same.
Anybody else have an opinion on this?

I think its either 1. a form of perversion for them (eg getting off on demeaning others). 2. boosting their self-esteem & defense mechanisms (eg practicing their insults and building up a repertoire) 3. deliberately planted in social media to demotivate and create anti-social behavior.
Or all of the above.

Anybody else have an opinion on this? "naterdawg," maybe you should find another hobby. Message boards clearly aren't for you. As Yogi Berra said, "It's deja vu all over again."

I feel your pain, Naterdawg, and it seems that the Internet has turned every other 98 lb weakling into a 500 lb gorilla when he logs in on-line. The meanness, sadly, comes with the territory of even the best moderated boards. There are, fortunately, some sites that are vastly superior to others.

Hey, I've had my own epiphany of sorts, so I know it can be done. Why should I leave? Are you saying this attitude stuff is "just the way it is?"

1/ The moderation on most forums is shockingly bad and often biased. The mods will go after easy targets and tend to be in a clique with the worst trolls. Quite often anyway.
2/ Anonymity allows people to post crap and abuse people. I don't mind if you disagree with my opinion but there is no need to abuse me just because you disagree. Again, a good Mod and Admin should be addressing that kind of behaviour. Stop this kind of childish crap so people know that the best thing to do is report it rather than fire back with more abuse.
3/ Politics. I have to say it. This is a movie/TV forum yet most of the threads are political one way or another. This also sparks aggression and things get heated.
So yeah I relate 100%, I joined here to discuss film and TV, I did get involved in some political chats but it's not why I am here and it does kind of annoy me that politics is what this site is really about. Or maybe it is just the aggression involved in those threads. I don't know but the bottom line is that movies and TV is an escape for me, I don't need to be getting abused or seeing thread after thread about something political, even if I don't open the thread, I still see the title.
The site needs direction and the trolls need to be dealt with.

You're half way there, don't care about others' behavior and know you are good. Take care of the good people, as someone once told me.

The marvel and DC boards are already beginning to argue over who has the better series with insults and meaningless achievements rather than discussing the movies. It's already getting annoying.

I think its because people forget that they are actually talking to other humans. the fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. We may disagree at times with others but respectfully know each other has been heard and understood. Good hearts see true intention. We are all wearing masks in this costume party. In some we see a darkness born of pain that seeks to inflict it upon others. I always try to speak to everyone as if we children playing and sharing love. As if every word was the last we would ever speak to them. Fans and friends among those of good will and of like minds, we welcome you.

I've wondered the same thing. Maybe some people think it's expected of them. Kind of like hating Nickelback, Coldplay, Walmart, or the word moist, or liking Kale. It's socially acceptable and cool to be snarky and hateful on forums.

It's easy to be an ass when no one knows who you are. I remember back in the 60's on CB radios, there were always some dick that was a tough guy because he could sit in the dark behind a mic and not worry about anyone finding out who he was. That changed when most people went to 2 meter shortwave band, where you HAVE to identify yourself... funny, you don't get anyone threatening or harassing you anymore! Today, they sit behind a keyboard. Chalk it up to a phrase from "Support Your Local Sheriff"... "You're the toughest talking blowhard I ever heard!". Basically, screw them and just enjoy that you have a place to chat.

Simply put, its easy to hide behind a username where you can lie about everything.
I just don't feed the trolls and keep on rolling my way around the board.

The problem is some trolls are subtle and you don't know you have been suckered until a few posts have been exchanged. This is what makes it even harder at times to even be be bothered on forums.

Some have gotten warned here for directly attacking members. Many of the posters are refugees from IMDB, and those included the Politics board, Religion and Faith. Both of these boards had their own ecosystem on IMDB. We try to preserve that as much as we can.

artcurus - it is the bickering on the politics/religion boards as well as posts there outnumbering the movie/TV ones that will end up killing this site.

No because the posters have a choice, the rest of forum is relatively calm and spam free. The ones that want to discuss movies go there and ingore the other controversial boards. The members here are quick to report issues.

artcurus - What part of the political/religious threads outnumber the film and TV threads didn't you understand? Not to mention the bickering. Honestly this site seems to be Pro Troll.
