How long will it take the Mormon leadership to excommunicate this member? Ayla Stewart has gone farther over the accepted line than anybody ejected by the LDS church in recent years reported in the media. Excommunicate

They got it from the Old Testament. God's chosen people. The New Testament shows advancement on the specific point of racism.

The Israelites were interracially marrying since before Exodus.

I think they take it a bit further than that. What are you thinking of that makes them racist? They believe (perhaps past tense officially) that cain had his skin darkened by God, by inference the darker your skin is the more God hates you.

The Mark of Cain stuff is probably a concept that many Mormons started to believe in the 19th Century that most likely came from the general Protestant thinking at the time that bought into it. Brigham Young certainly seems to have bought into it, but by the mid-20th Century the president of the LDS church was repudiating this concept, and if a Mormon professed this now he/she would be taken to task for promulgating false doctrine. The darker the skin the more God hates you was never a Mormon concept.

There is also the comments on the Maori who must be naughty because their skin is dark www.keepapitchinin.org/2011/08/04/i-have-a-question-1895/I accept that doctrinally the mormons claim to have changed, but when a fundamental part of your religion is that God darkened the skin of naughty people I can't help but think that racism is going to be more endemic.

The belief in a change in color of the skin of "Lamanites" in the Book of Mormon didn't lead to much racism in my experience. The racist Mormons I have known in the past were rather squarely aimed at black people of African heritage and not against Native Americans.

Fair observation, and to be fair there are huge amounts of Maori and PI who are Mormon, I could be wrong I just think the whole God changed the colour of their skin and that the Maori were likely to be being punished by skin colour as pretty red flags in terms of enabling racists.

I don't remember any Mormons ever thinking that the Maori had dark skins due to any punishment. They were never regarded as having African heritage so never had any restrictions upon membership or participation in any church ordinances. Although Native Americans and other indigenous New World people were considered to be descendants of Lamanites who had their skins darkened according to the Book of Mormon, they were not considered to be second class due to a one time action against ancestors and not being punished with dark skins because of the past. Despite what is written in the links provided I think Joseph Smith was not a racist. Brigham Young certainly was. The Mormons I knew that actually thought much about anthropology never seemed to think that Pacific Island peoples or the Maori were descendents of Book of Mormon peoples.
