"He used to bring beautiful women here... eat fine meals, drink fine wine, listen to music... but it always ended with screaming."The brilliant scientist Dr. Edgar Pretorius (Ted Sorel) and his assistant Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) are about to demonstrate a groundbraking experiment with their latest invention, the Resonator. A machine that was at first meant to stimulate the pineal gland but instead it turns out to become a portal for another dimension. In a moment of madness, Dr. Pretorius is attacked by an unkown force which leaves poor Dr. Tillinghast all alone with a bunch of unanswered questions and one hell of a problem, as to try convince the local police of what actually happened. The only way to clear his name is to be put in the cutody of the beautiful young Dr. Katherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) who wants to re-create the experiment and at the same time get a closer look at the Resonator.A couple of years ago I would have put Re-Animator (1985) as Gordon's finest hour, but I think that over time From Beyond is were he really peaked and is probably one of the best body horror films ever made. The acting and tone of the film is more serious than in Re-Animator and the special effects ranges from more campy to truly horrific and nightmarish stuff, that looks fantastic compared to most modern horror films and the age of CGI. Ted Sorel might not be as fun as David Gale but he sure is a memorable baddie. Ken Foree provides most of the comedic scenes but when the shit gets real he stands his ground. Jeffrey Combs is as always brilliant as the nevrotic and frail Dr. Tillinghast. And of course Barbara Crampton is well, an 80s scream queen goddess as Katherine McMichaels !

While I do agree about the effects being great and it's always nice to see the lovely Barbara C in such a sexy outfit, the movie as a whole does little for me. The story doesn't realy appeal to me and the characters feel rather empty. I think Re-Animator does a much better job in these departments. I think Re-Animator is much more fun, cared more about the characters, better developed story. From Beyond stayed too vague and not that entertaining for my tastes. My favorite S. Gordon movie however is Dolls (1987). Highy entertaining, nice characters, funny at times and I love those stop motion effects.

I have no trouble seeing that it is not as well liked or entertaining as Re-Animtor, and for me they are both in the 10/10 horror movie category, but still there's just something about From Beyond that has pulled it just slighly above, in term of "rewatchability" but not by much though. Well, at least we can agree on that, Dolls (1987) is a very entertaining and fun little horror gem, witch comes with a great atmosphere, music and some very interesting characters and are along with Puppet Master (1989) and Magic (1978) my favorite dolls movie.

Very entertaining film that effectively blends horror and humor. The cast is solid, the effects are impressive, the look is striking (love that pink tint), and of course we have Barbara Crampton in THAT get-up.

I always felt this had cult appeal, and it sticks with me. I like to pair this with the other eighties style sci-fi bit of imagination NIGHTFLYERS, and equate it with the hippie era pair of ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS and SILENT RUNNING.
Why do I link these together? They all involve a lot of theatrics and imagination, and they're "off kilter". I like "off kilter".
I especially liked the fairly modest special effects of the nightmare vision of the weird shapes in the air.
7.7/10 from me, but I can easily see how some people can be highly fascinated with this one.

It might just be Stuart Gordon's funniest film. I love it.

Jeffrey Combs is awesome and I always liked this one. I think I watch this one more often that Re-Animator.

This was OK but I think Re-Animator was better.
