"I've laid more pipe in this town than Wabasha Plumbing."John Gustafson (Jack Lemmon) and Max Goldman (Walter Matthau) are the neighborhoods least favorite old men, who's only interest in life beside being bitter and lonely, are of fishing and trying to keep their lifelong and fierce rivalry alive and well. Which is not gonna be a problem, when the free spirited and beautiful Ariel (Ann-Margret) moves in next-door. Another one of my childhood favorites. Used to watch it all the time, did not catch up on all the jokes though, but that made it even funnier seeing it later on. The film managed to give Lemmon and Matthau a well deserved comeback and provided several decent collabrations between the two of them, later on. Another Grumpy Old Men sequel arrived a couple of years later, and while being not as good as the first one, it was still entertaining. This romantic buddy comedy comes along with a fine cast were Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollack, Ossie Davis of course the great Burgess Meredith who kept stealing the show as grandpa. Not always a big fan of the blooper reels in the end credits, but this film is surely amongst the better one at that. Loved some of the polka songs thrown in there too, by Frank Yankovic and his Yanks, "IIIIIAAAAA IAAAAA IAAAAA OOOOH" must be a real tough job being the song writer in the polka orchestra.

Ended up "double-dipping" into another copy of this movie along with its follow up through the purchase of the 2009 DVD version called Grumpy Old Men Collection. Had not seen the first film since around winter of 2011, which was far too long to go without seeing it and I had a great time re-watching it last night. Loved the use of locations along with the cozy and warm little town feel it got. While the film have several classic comedy scenes, specially that which are built upon the great friendship between Matthau and Lemmon, I also really enjoyed that it feautered some very important life lessons in some of the more tender/dramatic scenes. I really wish Alan Silvestri and his original score would find its way to a CD release, I know the follow up got one but it only contains 3-4 of his work, while the rest is filled up with songs by other artists.

I never liked these movies. I love mathau and lemmon but not together. I loved lemmon in how to murder your wife. And I loved mathau in Dennis the menace.

Watched Grumpier Old Men (1995) last night and while not as good as the first one, it does contain several funny and enjoyable scenes and also comes with some very sweet and touching moments too. Sure, the romance part do get a bit too "heavy" at times, and while I was glad to see Max finally meet his dream woman (and what a woman she was, incredible to think that Sophia Loren was in her 60s while making the movie) but the subplot involving Kevin Pollak as Jacob and Daryl Hanna as Melanie was not as well made as during the first film and took up a bit too much space, and while I really liked Burgess Meredith's character grandpa Gustafson, the scenes with him an the older italian lady felt also a bit "rushed" like most of the romantic scenes in this film, and I almost expected Goldman's new furry little friend to get it on a little too well with Gustafson's cat, but thankfully that never happened.
The best scenes for me was once again the more tender/sweet ones, specially the beautiful yet sad moment where John finds his old dad sitting all by himself at their favorite fishing lake and with a stunning sunset in the background, only to realize that "Looks like god remembered you pap" referencing to an earlier scene in which Burgess Meredith told about his funny view of life and that he had during most of his 95 year on earth kept to eating unhealthy food, drinking lots of alcohol and smoked almost everyday for his entire life and still he outlived all of the health fanatics that kept dropping and thought that maybe god himself had forgotten about him.
