What did you have to read?
Between 4th and 8th grade I had:
The Arabian Nights Robinson Crusoe Lorna Doone Around the World in 80 Days Theras and His Town Swiss Family Robinson The Story of a Bad Boy Johnny Tremain Sign of the Beaver The Prince and the Pauper Wuthering Heights
And of all of these, the only ones I had any luck paying attention to, or even liked, are the ones that nobody ever heard of, that are not famous or 'classic', but all that 1800s old writing style, etc., that was impossible to get through at 9-10 years old, it was boring and stuffy and impossible to keep any interest in. To this day I don't remember reading the end of Around the World in 80 Days, and yet I must've because incomplete was never an option.

In high school:
Death of A Salesman Romeo and Juliet To Kill A Mockingbird The Great Gatsby Of Mice and Men These Eyes Were Watching God Great Expectations Juliet Caesar Scarlet Letter Salem Hunt Witch, I think that was the name of it. Forgot the name of it but I think it was based on "My Fair Lady".
That's all I can name from the top of my head.

Quite a few books were required reading, but, being a nerd, I had already read some of them.
5th Grade (I was homeschooled before 5th grade):
HATCHET BRIDGE TO TEREBITHIA THE SIGN OF THE BEAVER (which I had read before already) BUD, NOT BUDDY (which I had read before already) HOLES (my introduction to the story, but now one of my favorites) THE MOUSE AND THE MOTORCYCLE (Which I had read before already)
6th Grade
JASON'S GOLD STARGIRL SURVIVING THE APPLEWHITES
7th Grade
ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY THE CAY THE MISFITS A CHRISTMAS CAROL (which I had read millions of times before already, as it's one of my all time favorites)
8th Grade
FEVER: 1793 THE OUTSIDERS Some book about people who plant in a junk yard that I can't remember the title of.
9th Grade
THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD GREEK MYTHOLOGY (which I was already very knowledgable with) ROMEO AND JULIET (which I had read before already)
10th Grade
THE CRUCIBLE HUCKLEBERRY FINN (which I had read before already, honestly, I prefer "Tom Sawyer") TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE OF MICE AND MEN (which I hated) A few others that I can't remember the titles of
11th Grade
MACBETH (which I had read before already) BEOWULF LORD OF THE FLIES (which I hated) FRANKENSTEIN (which I had read already before)
12th Grade (where I had three different literature classes: Children's Lit, Sci Fi/Fantasy, and the normal literature class)
FAIRY TALES: Rapunzel (Grimm), Snow White (Grimm), Cinderella (Grimm), The Bremen Town Musicians (Grimm), Red Riding Hood (both Perrault and Grimm), Jack and the Beanstalk (Jacobs), Three Bears (Southey), Three Little Pigs (Jacobs), and Hansel and Grethel (Grimm). All of which I had already read thousands of times (I'm a fairy tale fanatic). HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE (my introduction to Harry Potter, and I enjoyed it) JURASSIC PARK (I actually read way ahead of the schedule on this one, because I enjoyed it so much. I don't know why people say the movie is better.) WIZARD OF EARTHSEA (Which I hated) Fahrenheit 451 (which was just okay)

I read The Crucible a couple years ago. If I'd had it in high school I probably would've reacted a lot like Thelma Harper when she read The Scarlet Letter.

A lot of the original fairy tales had much darker elements to them. I like that about them.

A lot of the original fairy tales had much darker elements to them. I like that about them. I know. It'd be cool with the horror movie hype if some screenplay writer would adapt one of them into a horror movie, as some of them have some pretty horrific stuff ("Fitcher's Bird," "The Robber Bridegroom," etc.) I love the fairy tales.

We didn't have any required books to read but got to pick them ourselves. I don't remember all of them as I read about 1-2 books per day from the age of about 8 until I started university (I know, I was completely crazy, I even read other students books and gave them a summary and earned some money . But I do remember that when I was 10 i choose War and Peace by Tolstoj and my teacher said it was to big and "adult" for me (new teacher that didn't know me), and boy did I prove her wrong.

Wish I could remember more, but it's been quite some time.
I do remember reading the Iliad and the Odyssey and quite a few of Shakespeare's works (Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, etc.)
Actually revisited the Iliad awhile back (the old Penguin Rieu translation) and enjoyed it a lot.

I detested almost all of the required reading. I've always loved to read but I hated being ordered to do so. Even one of my high school teachers agreed that the list of required books should be scrapped and updated. Too bad it never was, at least not in my time. The only book on the list that I loved enough to read over again was Jane Eyre.
