I understand that it has something of a cult following. I just recently watched The Thing (another Carpenter movie) and I loved it.
Is this one worth checking out? I saw it for pretty cheap at a movie store near(ish) me.

Regardless it's a cool movie and a lot of fun with Kurt Russel poking fun at his tough guy character from other movies.

"Big Trouble in Little China" is tons of fun. An imaginative, rollicking adventure combining action, fantasy, martial arts, and Chinese mysticism. Kurt Russell is hilarious as a supposed "hero" who doesn't realize that he's actually the comedy relief.

I don't know what it is. I'm a huge Kurt Russel fan and a huge Carpenter fan and a huge fan of Kung Fu and Fantasy movies but when I saw this in the theater when it first came out I didn't love it.
I thought it was ok but I think it could have been so much better. I think the comedy went a little too far and was sometimes ham fisted and the whole thing was just slightly over the top. Maybe I was just expecting a different kind of movie. Maybe I was expecting a normal action movie and was disappointed that it was an action comedy instead. But that is weird because I love action comedies too.
I know it has a strong cult following but it's still not one of my favorites.

I agree also JC's film The Thing is really excellent as well ( and another for the DVD Collection as well ) . The other 2 John Carpenter / Kurt Russell films that are also big favorites of mine is Escape from New York (1981) and Escape from L.A. (1996) ( and also have both on DVD too ) . Thanks sdrew13163 for your subject post .

A big YES! One of the funniest and most enjoyable, quotable action/adventure comedies of the 1980s, and well, maybe of all time.
"Well, ya see, I'm not saying that I've been everywhere and I've done everything, but I do know it's a pretty amazing planet we live on here, and a man would have to be some kind of FOOL to think we're alone in THIS universe." - Jack Burton

Update: I just finished it up.
It was good. Exactly what I was expecting, but that's not a bad thing. Most of the action was good and Russell really did provide most of the laughs. I liked the extreme Kung Fu stuff and shamelessly over-the-top story and characters.
It was just a lot of fun. What more can you ask?
7/10

Yes! Definitely watch it. It was my dad's favorite movie and one of my fondest memories, watching it with him. And I have green eyes, too - so he used to joke about that.

... saw it twice in the theater in May 2015. Big Trouble in Little China is not exactly my type of thing, but it is sort of memorable, especially the closing credits song.
I consider the film "decent." If a movie can be considered "funky," this one certainly qualifies.
