I'm not fond of Hoult. I probably won't watch this.

I hope they do a good job with this biopic. You do of course realize that this is Hollywood making a film about a man who was a staunch Traditionalist, Conservative, and devout Christian Roman Catholic, right?

Yeah, but I like to at least start out optimistic before reality sets in.

Shadowlands (Lewis) was pretty good... That said, I expect his priest guardian to be oppressive, if not cartoonishly so. This is just about his courtship/WW1.

Sad, considering that in real life Tolkien and his guardian got along well as far as I understand.

There was a special on TV (I was at a hotel, very little to pick from and poor cable that didn't show the title of what you were viewing) about a month ago, and they were talking about when he met his wife at the time I tuned in. According to that documentary/whatever, it sounded like the first friction in the relationship between Tolkien and his guardian, had been when Tolkien wanted to marry his future-wife, due to the financial burdens, it being a distraction to Tolkien's schooling for him to be in love/courting, and the religious differences between he and his intended-bride. So he ended his association with his future-wife for some time, still failed a bunch of classes, then reconnected with his lady love a couple years later, getting her to agree to marry him despite already being engaged to someone else, then she changed religions to be with Tolkien, he went off to the fight the War, and she was praised by him for being willing to marry someone who had no fortune to care for her with and was off to be canon fodder.
