Yes, dammit, I love this movie so much I am starting my first thread about a particular movie with it.
The People Under the Stairs is easily my favorite Wes Craven movie. I absolutely love everything about it, and I know it sounds hyperbolic, but the mix of scares and humor is perfect. It gets silly, but never too much to be a full-on comedy, and the scary stuff is solid and disturbing enough for it to be a serious horror movie.
Everett McGill and Wendy Robie are perfect as the bad guys. Over-the-top, yes, and that's what makes their performances so brilliant. They are completely committed to their roles and it's a delight to watch Robie say things like, "Bad girls burn in hell," or McGill say, "I keep 'em real hungry!" as he disembowels a corpse, eats some tasty entrails, and throws some of them to the basement freaks.
You also get Ving Rhames as Leroy the burglar, who also has some great quotes like, "Maybe the president will make me Secretary of Pussy" and "Thirteen's unlucky anyway. Too old to get tit, too young to get ass."
Brandon Adams as Fool, the kid burglar is very good in the starring role. And A.J. Langer as Alice, the "daughter" who is trapped inside the house.
What do you think of this movie? I know it's generally considered a mediocre movie, so I'm not expecting a lot of love, but I am curious.

My favorite 90s Craven film, and one that combines horror and comedy to almost perfection, being kind of a weird/bizarre almost Home Alone adventure only far more bad ass, and you know that little Kevin would stand no chance in this film.

I saw this movie in the theaters, and I haven't seen it since. I remember thinking it was just okay, but I have long been interested in revisiting it. I've noticed that it has a cult following now. Maybe it's better than I remember.

I love it too, such a fun movie. Everett McGill & Wendy Robie are so over-the-top in a wonderful way.

I expected a lot from this movie, but it turned out rather average to me.

I expected a lot from this movie, but it turned out rather average to me. Same. I've watched it few times with about ten years in between but it didn't really improve from how I remembered it. Nice concept but it feels really padded with people just running around the house.

Superb horror with the dense, questionable atmosphere of a twisted fairy tale. In my opinion, it's without doubt one of the best films of the 1990s, one that strikes a perfect balance between grotesque horror, satirical humour and sincere drama - a rare combination that's notoriously difficult to pull off.

Am I the only one that thinks the idea to use the song originally made for Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" at the end actually fits? Granted the whole reason anything happened was because a kid got involved with a breaking and entering heist, still, once the whole neighborhood came out and got involved, that gave the kids a chance to actually win, and in the end everybody won.

I love it too, but I honestly find it more funny than anything. It takes really disturbing subject matter and makes it into a freaking Tom and Jerry cartoon. Everett McGill is just hilarious in this movie and I love the way he delivers every line.

I don't remember much except that kid showing that his tongue had been cut off. Yikes! 😱
