I don't follow the PL nearly as closely as I used to, so I'm interested in seeing what hardcore fans think about who's top at particular positions. When it comes to defenders, in my day the main names were guys like Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, Rio Ferdinand and later Nemanja Vidic and Vincent Kompany.
In today's era, these names in the poll are the ones I thought of off the top of my head. Which of these players strikes you as the best defender, if any?
Also I have a feeling I know the answer to this question already but is this seen as a strong era of defense in the Premier League?

Not overly familiar with the individual players in the EPL, I follow the conference more closely...
But, from what I hear on commentaries, will go with Luiz.

As far as centre halves are concerned it's a tallest midget competition. All of Chelsea's defenders look good because they're playing in a back 3 - you only have to do a third of the work, United's has a clumsy oafs in Smalling and dangerous maniacs in Jones and Rojo. Liverpool's defence is appalling and City's isn't great either.
Bailly, Alderwireld and Koscielny might be worth a shout.
