Played back to back. “Modern Family” & "Blackish" are two of the most popular TV comedy shows on the screen today. To me, the difference between the two shows are glaring. Sofia Vergara has absolutely zero range as an actress. They prefer to show her only getting angry, as this is the only effective method of acting that she can articulate. Meanwhile, the female lead of, "Blackish" Tracee Ellis Ross (The daughter of Diana Ross.) won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of, "Rainbow Johnson". -On, "Modern Family" The kindest thing that we could say about the youngest cast-member, Aubrey Anderson-Emmos who's portrayed 'Lily" since the shows debut, is that she sure wasn't born a natural actress! -But all 4 of the Johnson children on, "Blackish" can act, and the producers of the show do not hesitate to show off their abilities! -Story-lines involving the kids are all well written and allows them to grow as young actors & actresses... Any story-lines on, "Modern Family" that involve the characters of, “Luke”, “Lily” or “Gloria” always come across as very wooden and over or under acted. -I love, "Blackish". -It's social commentary is always spot on. All that being said, I also enjoy, "Modern Family" quite a bit. Yes, it's stupid... but so was, "Three's Company"! I'm easy... and I enjoy looking at Sofia Vergara's boobs. The other female lead on, “Modern Family" actress, Julie Bowen who portrays the character of, “Claire” is a stunning blond who is simply hilarious. She practically carries the entire show... She has won two Emmy awards for her performances on the show… So pick yer poison! -Which is the better show? -Spot on social commentary with a laugh attached, or “The Julie Bowen Show” co-starring Sofia Vergara’s angry-breasts!

Blackish is just too...black-sounding for me.

This family on, Blackish" is more homogenized then Bill Cosby's "Huxtable's" ever were! The only things missing are the 80's shoulder-pads! -They could have easily called this show, "Whitish" and been just as correct! -You should give it a try!

I prefer more arty and intellectual depictions, like in "Menace II Society"

Except there don't appear to be any 80's shoulder pads.

I don't know about those shoulder-pads, but those kids on blackish only seem to care about their African roots in the month of February! The rest of the year Jr. is practicing his wizarding skills & the eldest gal is taking selfies!

I can't really comment on Black-ish (2014) because I don't watch it as part of ABC's Wednesday night comedy lineup. Other than Modern Family (2009), the only other show I watch is The Goldbergs (2013).
So, naturally, my vote goes towards MF.

I watched The Goldbergs on a whim midway through the first season and was surprised at how much I liked it. Big Tasty is awesome.

How can you say that, when EVERY episode of Blackish is about how the black man/woman suffers because of the white man/woman. Dre is a successful PR person, lives in a frickin' mansion, has a surgeon for a wife, and all he does is complain about how the white man has held him down. When they do comedy, it's hilarious. But I've noticed lately that the preaching is becoming bit much.

Dre constantly fantasizes about going back to his black roots only to remember that they were not as good as he remembers. He grew up poor and in the ghetto and yet he constantly tries to get his kids to conceptualize his childhood when they have a better life and better opportunities than what he grew up with. He thinks they are too whitewashed when he (and Rainbow) are exactly the same. Dre may bring up being black and the black experience all the time but they never really change they are still the same upper middle class suburban LA family. It's who they are and despite Dre's (and sometimes Rainbow's) fight against it its not going to change.

I realize that's the premise of the show, but when they start running old photographs and films from the past, with Dre narrating about "the Black experience," it gets a tad tiring. Especially in EVERY episode.

WOW! Didn't you just say it all! That was some very thoughtful analysis Naterdog! "This is kind of the point of the show.
