thegotboard.comAbsolutely no idea what's going on. Any members who visited there, can you please post here? I loved talking about the show there and I have no idea how many members are also here. Basically I'm trying to see who we still have and who might be lost forever...

The GOT Board is definitely "out of business". I never really understood why people stayed there after it was made a semi-private affair instead of moving here, but then, I don't understand why people do many things anyway.

Hey man. Who were you there? Or same name? I used the same name on the GoT board but I wasn't very active over there. Some people might be more familiar with my original IMDb username; robin_koeman.

I never knew it had been made a 'semi-private affair.' I must have missed that memo. I never moved here because it was too much of a pain in the ass to figure out where the GoT board was amidst all the other options.

Posts were only visible to logged in members, so there was barely any inflow and requests for membership were kept on hold for a long time. The forum was opened shortly before S7 started, new members admitted, then closed again. It remained a very confidential thing. There was no memo. You had to find out by reading here from people asking how to get in or by logging out and seeing you had to log in again to see anything.

I got the impression the board creator lost interest in it, but I didn't realize new memberships were locked down. Now I wonder why they just didn't merge these two boards like they were talking about in February.

Was there drama right before the shut down? It's not like the admin would actually have to do anything even if he were bored to keep things open would he? I wonder what cause him to do it? i much prefer his board to this one.

I will have to get used to this one now, I guess. I've read the reddit Freefolk board, but I utterly despise that format and never know if I'm reading all the posts thus I never even attempted to post.

Now I wonder why they just didn't merge these two boards like they were talking about in February. You didn't pay attention, did you? "They" could not merge boards, could not force users of one to move to another. All that could have been done was shut it down earlier, I suppose. People were told the GOT board was being kept alive as a fall back to this one in case it disappeared. It had been created as a rescue boat from IMDb and by the time IMDb 2.0 (this place) became the larger ship, it had served its purpose. The GOT board was then kept afloat to accommodate the small bunch who insisted on staying there, revived a little when S7 came along, then sunk after the S7 traffic went down. I don't think its creator had any personal interest in it beyond helping the original IMDb users stay together and that had been achieved.

It is the same format with the same functionalities (this one has a more flexible reply editor), only the layout is a little different. I don't know what an admin has to do to keep things running but I suppose there is something. The GOT Board was closed down because its activity was waning (be honest, how many active users can you remember? Was it 10 or 15?).

But the issue is that unlike you or I, many users may not be prepared for it. Sure it was only 10-15 at most. But it was a small private community with some great users. They may never find this place. No way to contact them as far as I know They had all joined early and must have been aware of this place since moving to it was discussed in pinned discussions.

If there's anything to be learnt from the imdb episode, it's that anything on the internet should be considered temporary. It will last only until the site's owner sells to a massive corporation that couldn't care less (imdb, chowhound)--or the owner loses interest, goes to jail/has personal issues*, or dies. I've seen this over and over again. Almost got bit in the wallet when a major bitcoins depository went offline without any warning due to legal problems. Thankfully, I hadn't yet given them any of my money because they hadn't finished processing my application. *I'm thinking of a very popular water cooling webstore that up and died a few years back without any warning (never did get back some money they owed me )

Anything anywhere is temporary. You are too.
